dkCambridgeshire Posted October 10, 2012 Share #1  Posted October 10, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Today, the UK Leica Society organised a trip to Barnsdale Gardens, Exton near Rutland Water. I took my Leica X1 and a couple of ancient Leitz Elpro VIb supplementary close-up lenses which have been adapted via a step-up ring to fit onto an aftermarket 49mm diameter filter holder. The X1 does not have a filter ring and its macro capability is quite poor - hence the need to use supplementary close-up lenses. The Elpro lenses are achromatic and enable the X1 to be used for good quality close-ups.  Although it's not the best time of year for butterflies, lepidoptera were in evidence with lots of Commas and Red Admirals feeding on the fading flowers.  This Comma was quite obliging but would have been an impossible shot with the X1 without use of a supplementary close-up lens.    Leica X1, plus two Elpro VIb close-up lenses, ISO 400, 1/320 @ f14, daylight, handheld camera.  Best wishes  dunk

dkCambridgeshire Posted October 12, 2012 Author Share #5  Posted October 12, 2012 Thank you for your +ve comments ... here's another insect taken at Barnsdale with the same X1/Elpro c/u lens combination ... a bee this time ... 1/640 @ f5.6 with natural light, handheld camera whilst looking through the monitor and lining up the focus spot on the LHS. With an APS sensor there is a bit more depth of field compared to a FF camera - hence the relatively wide aperture. This image has been slightly cropped.    Best wishes  dunk
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 12, 2012 Author Share #6  Posted October 12, 2012 To illustrate the Elpro VIb c/u lenses attached to the X1:    These Elpro VIb lenses have an M44 thread for which I do not have a suitable stepping ring - thus one Elpro was glued into the 52mm-49mm stepping ring. The later manufactured Elpro 2 (the Elpro 2 and VIb are both 4.92 diopter) has a dual 55mm/44mm thread so is more easily adapted - but the Elpro VIb is usually sold cheaper than the Elpro 2.  Best wishes  dunk
Iduna Posted October 12, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted October 12, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dunk, Â the bee is very nice and with its light colours also a fine macro. Thanks for showing the X1 and the mounted Elpro.I use the same tube and this is telling I only have to add such a lens. Good!
dkCambridgeshire Posted October 12, 2012 Author Share #8  Posted October 12, 2012 Dunk, the bee is very nice and with its light colours also a fine macro. Thanks for showing the X1 and the mounted Elpro.I use the same tube and this is telling I only have to add such a lens. Good!  You will need more than one Elpro lens to achieve eg more than 1/4 life size magnification. The Elpro lenses can be stacked together on the Leica X1; the Elpro VIb (44mm thread) and the Elpro 2 (dual 44mm and 55mm threads) are both 4.92 diopter and optically identical.  According to my experiments the possible magnifications with the X1 are as follows:  One Elpro VIb or Elpro 2 : at 10cm distance mag 0.2; at 25cm distance mag. 0.10 (that's 1/5 and 1/10 life size ... distance being measured from front of the mounted Elpro to the subject)  Two Elpro V1b or two Elpro 2 screwed together: at 7cm distance mag 0.3; at 11cm distance mag 0.22 ( that’s approx 1/3 life size and 1/5 life size)  Three Elpro VIb or three Elpro 2 screwed together: at 4cm distance mag 0.4; at 7.7cm distance mag 0.3 ( that’s approx 2/5 life size and 1/3 life size)  The VIb Elpro lenses are usually cheaper to buy.  Three Elpro lenses can be stacked together without causing vignetting on an APS sensor camera.  I have not tried this with the Leica X2 but it should work the same as with the X1. However, this needs clarification because I think the X2 does not have a separate macro focusing mode - its close focus is part of the regular focus.  Best wishes  dunk
