iphoenix Posted October 9, 2012 Share #1 Posted October 9, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) My M3 DW's s/no. is 833 944. It has the space between the first and second sets of numbers. Is this significant, or does it mean nothing?
Advertisement Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Hi iphoenix, Take a look here Something I've noticed whilst handling my M3 (with love). I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
CalArts 99 Posted October 9, 2012 Share #2 Posted October 9, 2012 Do you mean like this? I have always assumed it was where a comma would normally go as in: 866,847. On the M3 top plates that have serial numbers over a million, there is also a space between the first number and the next three. e.g., 1 100
philipus Posted October 9, 2012 Share #3 Posted October 9, 2012 Yes I also had this on my M3 (which I since handed back to the dealer due to a malfunction). From what I've gathered it seems there were different sizes of the "M3" part though.
CalArts 99 Posted October 9, 2012 Share #4 Posted October 9, 2012 People say that the larger M3 engraving designates that the camera is ELCAN (Midland) manufactured even though it's marked Wetzlar. According to the collectors, any M3 that has a top plate that's engraved 'Made in Midland, Canada' is considered a rare ELCAN M3. The camera I posted above is made in Canada (the serial numbers fall within the M3 batch made in Canada in 1957.) I've personally never seen any written documentation about this, but that seems to be the general consensus.
