allamande Posted October 2, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted October 2, 2012 Stephen, Â You managed to convey the main characteristics of this plant with its lovely flowers. They are one of my favorites too. The type of thistle we have around my area look much rougher with larger spikes and flowers. Still, the feel is the same! Â Ece
SJP Posted October 2, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted October 2, 2012 Ece, K-H, Stuart many thanks, this is one of those pictures that nearly gets binned and then grows on you, i.e. sometimes you get lucky for not being too selective. It wasn't even well thought out at the time, or so I thought. Thistles even are resilient in cyberspace. Â EDIT: I am still wondering why this works, is it the diagonal? allamande Posted October 3, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted October 3, 2012 Stephen, I think this works well (for me, at least) because of the composition, colors, and selective focus used very effectively. The thistle are beautifully set off against the field and this also underscores how/where they grow, i.e. on the edges of fields, roads, and so on. The color of the flowers is spot on, and the plants are showcased against that backdrop (of horizontal bands as OOF areas) effortlessly.
