486 IR cut Filter on an Elmarit 24 ASPH on an M7

none of the shots I have seen WA with filters show shuch heavy cyan. I suspect there is a difference b/w film color/IR sensitivity and the M8 sensitivity.

John--

Very good point, but I think we're conflating a couple issues.

Film is for the most part insensitive to IR, so if someone had asked, "Should I remove my 486's when shooting film?" I would have said, "No, don't bother."

And that answer is still correct for lenses 50mm and longer.

But as you point out, we've got a big cyan issue here, which I think arises from these considerations:

1) The cyan color is due to visible red absorption by the filter, which becomes greater at higher off-axis angles.

2) The M8 seems already to compensate to a certain degree for this cyan fringe (see Sean Reid's wide angle comparisons), and is expected to do this better with firmware 1.1.

3) Since the M7's field of view is wider than the M8's, the effect will be noticeable over a wider field of view--and the wider the field of view, the greater the problem.

I'm glad Jean posted this. It's obvious when you think it through, but I would never have done that without this post.

I guess the easiest solution would be to buy a second set of wide angles for the M7. :)

Thanks, Howard for this very logical and thorough explanation.

No, I will not be getting another se of WA lenses for my analog M's....

I guess I have to start unscrewing and screwing the 486 filters...

Isn't a "firmware update" for the M7 just the loading of a new emulsion?

How I miss that wonderful, barely audible swish of my M7's shutter in operation! Still, the M8 decision was inevitable. Its teething problems and the necessary knocking of new workflow processing practices into my head will eventually seep into my brain.
