gregory_lypny Posted July 20, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 20, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, Hope you'll humour me with my novice question. I'm still getting the hang of this whole digital thing. I recently bought a D-Lux 2, and the manual says that if the camera is not going to be used for a long time (perish the thought, I know), then it should be removed and stored. How long is a long time? One month, two, three? Any advice would be most appreciated. Regards, Gregory

amedick Posted July 21, 2006 Share #2 Posted July 21, 2006 Gregory, never seen a hard and fast rule, though a month for most items would be a good criteria. One of the toughest scenarios for batteries is if they are "intelligent" or "smart" batteries, in a device that slowly drains them. In this scenario they are really drained down to zero over long periods of time, and may in fact not take a charge once they are finally connected to power. This is where the original warning comes from, and in particular the early laptop batteries were really suceptable to this. So for longer storage periods, better to pull the battery. wparsonsgisnet Posted July 21, 2006 Share #3 Posted July 21, 2006 Gregory, I don't think I have gone a month without using my D2, but I routinely remove batteries if a device is going to be idle for a period longer than one month. With the lithium batteries, I would charge then on a periodic basis if they are idle, say every 2 months. I think that if they go into deep discharge they may stay that way. With devices that use alkaline battereis, I place the batteries in a plastic bag, away from the device in case they leak.
