Advertisement Posted September 10, 2012 Posted September 10, 2012 Hi darvin2138, Take a look here Leica Camera Jubiilee Book?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
pop Posted September 10, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted September 10, 2012 That looks rather like a scam to me; there are several signs which wake my natural inborn mistrust: Â The internet address for the registration form is registered to Libya. The address where you are supposed to mail your image has no visible connection with Leica or anything I know. The mailing does not appear to be addressed to you personally. There is no usable information as to the sender or his/her position with Leica. Â I'd discard the whole thing. Do not under any circumstances reply to the mail or enter any information in the document in the Libyan site. Â If you would like to be included in such a book contact Leica themselves at one of their published mail addresses. Â Ah - I've nearly failed to notice that they want personal information about you along with your Flickr user name. I smell a rat.
andybarton Posted September 10, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted September 10, 2012 bit.ly is a standard url shortening website. The "ly" bit is related to Lybia, but doesn't mean that the company is based in Lybia. The Daily Telegraph in the UK use a qwert.ph linking system, which must be based somewhere other than the UK. (i.e the Philippines). Anyone can buy a .ph or .ly suffix web address if they choose to. Â This doesn't mean that this isn't a phishing scam, though. andybarton Posted September 10, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted September 10, 2012 Doing a google search for "Leica Camera Jubilee Book" does suggest that the initiative might have been legit. It's all over Facebook and Twitter, linked to what appear to be official accounts. Â The Jubilee refered to might be their 100th Anniversary coming up next year. darvin2138 Posted September 10, 2012 Author Share #5 Â Posted September 10, 2012 @POP. Â I'm trying to search the socialitysquared and did not find this connected in anyway to Libyan site. What I've found is this Sociality Squared is in NY. BTW, where did you get that site is from Libya? TIA.
bybrett Posted September 10, 2012 Share #6 Â Posted September 10, 2012 I presume you added a self-portrait image to Leica's Jubilee Book group on flickr way back in June? Leica said that you would be contacted through flickr if your image was selected for the book. The email address is genuine (not sure it should be shown on this Forum) as Sociality Squared is the company which organises the Facebook account and writes the copy for the Leica blog. So it is genuine and all of the photographers who submitted an image will be contacted in this way.
