ananda Posted September 3, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted September 3, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Since the D800 was announced I have been thinking of dumping my M9 and my two lenses (50 Lux and 28 Summicron), which would bring in far more than the costs of a D800 or even the 5D Mark III by Canon. I suppose I might have accomplished this had anyone shipped me a D800, but then over the past month I cancelled orders and now am focused on the M10 as a fantasy, though don't know what it's going to do yet that the M9 can't. Not that I can afford that M10, but at least I'm now willing to stay with Leica and my perfectly functioning M9. I realized several things: Â 1. I don't really need ultra high ISO performance. I am a journalist, semi retired, but still do stories with pics now and then as a "special correspondent" for an US newspaper when I am in Asia. Â 2. The Leica may not have the resolution of a D800, but it's certainly good enough for my purposes, and the relatively small size is great. Â 3. The M9 ought to be good for at least another three years. THEN, I could grad a cheaper M10 and still have my two beloved lenses -- presumably. Â Having settled this matter, I am now quite content and happy with what I have! I would wager that in recent months other M9 owners might have gone through the same dilemma I have.
Ecar Posted September 3, 2012 Share #2  Posted September 3, 2012 Quickly dismissed the thought of upgrading my 5D MkII, but very curious about what the M10 will look like. Not holding my breath, though, and could easily see my M9's going for several years as well. And any new über-priced M lens is not on my radar screen - have more than I need. thighslapper Posted September 3, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted September 3, 2012 The M9 for all its faults has the makings of a 'classic camera' and I am sure will be a much loved companion for many years to come .... even in the face of the seduction of a new incarnation and better 'on paper' specified competitors. Â It is the first camera for many years that I am 'content' with..... and I cant see the advantage of any of the available competitors......
Jager Posted September 3, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted September 3, 2012 Nikon and Canon both have terrific systems. I own a D3 and will probably have either a D4 or a D800 at some point. But I guess I'm fortunate in that I don't view DSLR's as competitors to Leica rangefinders. Rather, I see them as separate roads to the same end. Â In motorcycling terms - I'm off on a 3-day bike excursion as I write this - DSLR's are the interstate - fast, efficient, capable. Leica M's are that winding mountain road that gets you there in a very different way. Â Regardless of whatever wonderful qualities the M10 brings - and it surely will; or the esteemed strengths of the quite-right-to-be-ballyhooed-D800 - Your present M9 is an eminently capable camera, ananda. Utterly remarkable in what it can achieve. Glad to see you've closed the circle!
kaikeong Posted September 3, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted September 3, 2012 I say, M9 is indeed a perfect camera with a 18 megapixel at full frame. Why do I need to go for M10? Rumours says the M10 will have a CMOS 24 megapixel. Do you really need that big file? A good digital file also needs a good image. Therefore with good Leica lenses the images on 18 megapixel is more than enough for us. Will you print a large billboard of your picture? Most of us will not. CCD is better then CMOS for sure. When M8 came out it was not a full frame so it didn't do well. M9 has ISO up to 2500. How many of your images will you need to capture at more than ISO2500? Ask yourself. Honestly, we shoot most of our images at around ISO250 to ISO400. So as and when will you use ISO up to 12400 or? Â Rumours also said the M10 can do HD recording. Please Leica users do you really need HD? I see, unless you need to do a TV commercial or a HD movie. For everyday recording, anything from Iphone, Canon 5D MkII ...will do. Â So unless there are really good reasons for me, I will not leave my M9 for a M10. If you have too much money to spare. It's okay.
