albertknappmd Posted March 13, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 13, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I just got my Metz 54MZ-4i digital to use with my DMRs. i started palying around withy it last night and am used to teh Metz system as I ahd a 40MZ for years. Anyway, I noticed that the SCA3502 Mk5 works perfectly as the ISO,aperture, focal length and flash symbols were communicated without problem from camera to flash and vice versa.... But, I noticed two problems that I could not sort out. #1 In Aperture priority and with the flash in Auto mode (as ttl is a no-no in digital), the camera's speed did not automatically go to 1/250. In fact the speed remained at the correct ambient light level. For example, I was shooting a still life at f/2 with the speed of 1/8. I turned on the flash to A and the elelctric bolt appeared in the viewfinder as expected but the speed remained 1/8. When I exposed teh picture, the flash went off bu the camera shuuter remained open for the entire 1/8 second. I repeated this multiple times. i then did it in 2nd curtain and again the camera exposed for 1/8 sec before triggering the flash at the end of the exposure. IT SEEMS THAT THE CAMERA AND FLASH ARE NOT SYNCHRONIZING IN AUTO MODE. This is perplexing for as I said previously all other SCA3502 functions seem to work. The Metz instruction manual is its usual useless self. #2 Again in Auto mode, I experimented with flash suprression by changing the EV to -1 2/3 for fill flash. Took pictures at EV=0 and EV=-1 2/3 and exactly the same !!! Where is the flash suppression. Any ideas ???

Shootist Posted March 13, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 13, 2007 Not sure any flash will work in A mode to set shutter speed to the 1/250 setting, not even the Leica flash. I do know that my Nikon SB600 won't even fire if the camera is set to any other speed then 1/
albertknappmd Posted March 13, 2007 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 13, 2007 The Metz instruction booklet states that when the flash is in auto mode and the camera is in Aperture priority, then the speed is automatically set at 1/250. You can change this on your own if you want but it should defer to 1/250.... There must be a simple answer to this as the same behavior was noted on BOTH of my DMRs... sps Posted March 13, 2007 Share #4 Â Posted March 13, 2007 I use the Leica 24D and like it. I use primarily for fill flash. It automatically syncs with the camera. Â The exif on the last few flash shots showed 1/250th of a second exposure time, and I had the camera speed set to auto.
