TheBogart Posted August 29, 2012 Author Share #7 Posted August 29, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leica bug got me too... Got an M8, loved it.. then sold all my Canon gear and got an M9 I think this will be my fate too. But for now the M8 is (re)teaching me how to take a photo. It's a new world to explore, and i'm loving it! Can you tell me some Tips&Tricks that can help me master this Leica?
e1k3 Posted August 29, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 29, 2012 Congratulations. Nice to see, that there still is enthusiasm for the M8. Have mine for more than two years now and 28 is by far my most used lens. On most trips I actually take only this one lens, camera and lens packed in a small fogg flute bag. M8 image quality is great. Much better than most people would expect with a 10 MP sensor. The lack of AA filter really makes sense. Enjoy your acquisition. brianv Posted August 30, 2012 Share #10 Posted August 30, 2012 Can you tell me some Tips&Tricks that can help me master this Leica? Not too much to tell- Shoot DNG, use Lightroom 3.x or 4. I have not upgraded to the latter yet, will come free with my next camera. Don't believe everything you hear about High ISO- mine is fine at 1250, fireworks1 by anachronist1, on Flickr Beach Party by anachronist1, on Flickr and 2500 is not bad. The book " Leica M Digital Photography: M8/M8.2 Bower, Brian" came with my lightly used M8, and is a good read. IR cut filters- you can find them used, step-up rings help limit the number that you need to buy.

brianv Posted August 30, 2012 Share #14 Posted August 30, 2012 What setting are best for the M8. Shooting DNG (raw) is best- more dynamic range is preserved, and LightRoom does a better job with noise reduction than what can be done in the camera. I tend to shoot on "auto" exposure, but be quick to add +1/3 to +1 EV with backlit subjects. CZJ Sonnar 5cm F1.5, at f4 on the Leica M8 by anachronist1, on Flickr Another MUST- Sunshade for your lens. The above shot is with an Uncoated lens from the 1930s. With an SLR- you can see flare as it happens, not so with an RF. A shade is more important to eliminate unpleasant surprises. +1/3rd, in-camera JPEG- before I got lightroom. Once you get a good "Raw" processor, you never use in-camera JPEG. Lightroom will batch-convert the DNG's to JPEG, allows more control and more advanced noise reduction to be used. brianv Posted August 30, 2012 Share #16 Posted August 30, 2012 I have never used Aperture- but it seems to support it. https://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html I am not familiar with the noise reduction algorithms in Aperture, maybe someone can answer this? TheBogart Posted August 31, 2012 Author Share #17 Posted August 31, 2012 Yep, Aperture supports the Leica M8 DNG files. And the M8 has a old sister now. M2 na esplanada. by TheBogart, on Flickr And i am happy!
