M7 titanium and M6 titanium lenses

Dear all,

I own an M6 titanium finish (the original one with black ostrich leather cover) with the then contemporary 3 titanium finish lenses: Summilux-M 50/1.4, Summilux-M 35/1.4 ASPH and Elmarit-M 90/2.8.

I was now looking at adding a more recent camera to this setup. I don't believe Leica will ever come out with an M8 in titanium finish because the M8 does very probably not have the same lifespan as the M6/M7/MP etc.

The M6 TTL in titanium finish (with reddish leather cover) would work in terms of matching colors with the previous lenses, since both the original M6 and the M6 TTL are, in fact, just titanium covered and have the same color cast.

However, much more interesting would be to add the M7 in titanium. The 50th M birthday set consists of an M7 and Summilux-M 50/1.4 ASPH in titanium. This time, this is not just a cover layer, but almost solid titanium for many parts. I checked it out, it looks magnificent. The downside is that the color cast is quite darker than the M6 and M6 TTL titanium finish. The difference can be spotted easily.

I realize that most people who are lucky enough to have this 50th anniversary set probably don't use the camera at all (a shame) and consider it a collector's item for the shelves. But are there people who use it also in combination with the older titanium finish lenses? Does that match well?

Thanks.

Pascal

Hi Pascal;

I have - and SHOOT with :eek: the M7 birthday Titanium Camera and lenses.

It's a great camera to hold and feel while shooting. I also have an M6 Titan and an M6 TTL Titan that I shoot with - as well as their compliment of glass counterparts.

I do not mind all that much about the "look" of the Titanium plated (if that's the right term) lenses on the Solid Titanium M7 body; but to just let you know - it looks just fine. Once together, the 'yellow - ish' or 'goldish' tone on the Titanium Plated lenses kind of looks less so, and blends in better than you'd think.

Anyway - I love the M7 Titanium (and it's lenses) - and am not at all concerned about using the Titanium Plated lenses on it at all - in fact the black standard and black paint lenses look great on it!

BTW - no camera should be relegated to a glass case and never used (unless it is in a museum somewhere and is of some importance) :)

Mix 'n Match!

I have an M6 Titanium c.1992 ... does anyone know how many titanium finish M6 were made? Mine has certainly worn well and shows no scratches ... But I could never get on with the white shutter speed dial numerals on the titanium background ie could not always see them easily ... so have made them 'black' using a Staedtler waterproof ink pen ... the black ink can be easily removed if I ever decide to part with the camera.

I (touch wood) don't have this problem of the white inscriptions fading away on the titanium lenses. Maybe the problem was due only with the first titanium finish lens, the Summilux-M 35/1.4, and not with the later lenses? I wonder what Leica would say on the matter. Have you already contacted the customer service in Solms?
