This post is just to state that after 2000 shots and 1.5 months of ownership I have had "0" (Zero) problem with it.

I trust it to work today and every day to come as it did yesterday and the days before that.

If for some reason I do have a problem with it I feel Leica will fix it.

Similar experience. Off to Switzerland Wednesday to document a series of scientific exchanges. M8 + 28 / 50 / 75. 5D + 16-35 / 28-70 and 70-200. Different aspects of the job. Different tools. That's what's about isn't it?

I had a similar experience: Up to yesterday my M8 was working.

Yesterday I formatted a card, checked the battery, and put it in my bag to go do a session. When I got there it had fallen sick.

My advice to anyone with a M8 is to carry a backup.

And no, I don't feel that Leica will fix it. They will reset the camera, keep it for 6 weeks, send it back, then it will break again a few weeks later and that way they will keep the balls in the air for a year or so until their financial situation is better and they can have the whole thing re-engineered by Panasonic.

Of course, my Leica already has about 1200 shots on it, that's 60 20 exposure films, probably more than most amateurs would shoot in 5 years with a film Leica. SO they would be perfectly justified in saying that it is already over-used.

Amazing! M8s that actually work! From reading the posts for the last several months I thought they all had died by now. (Note the sarcasm.)

Mine is superb. Just need those darn filters - Leica! My Noctilux is magenta with envy!

Funny to read the title of this thread as I wasn't sure if it was tongue and cheek...

I too can report that after daily shooting, and upgrading to the prelminary firmware (1.091) and then the 'official' 1.092, I've had no problems with the camera. Once in a while there is some wierdness when reviewing pics in 'play' where the frame jumps around but I expect this to be worked out with next months firmware release.

It is dishearting to read about those having problems, especially with the wait and then anticipated joy of ownin the m8. I try not to look at mine and wonder when it will start to act up (I have one of the second batch which was delivered in late January). For me this was quite an investment (since my D2 was almost matching my needs) and I've since bought two more lenses; I was planning on making this my 'last' system for a while.

We can only hope that Leica will, as they have in the past, have the long view with respect to the development and support of the M8 so that we can all as owners have some mental reliability when we grab the camera and head off for a shoot.

With many forum members (pro and active shooters alike) shelving their 5D's and putting all their chips into Leica, I have to be confident that Leica will stand behind their products and we all won't get burned. This camera shouldn't be like buying an iPod where you need to sell it on eBay in a couple years so you can buy the newest one.

Well mine is working fine too, even better since last Thursday where Leica DK very kindly lend me a B&W 486 filter, no mishap what so ever!

I did have my share of magnenta cast, But with the 486 filter and 1,092 even the auto whitebalance is very good!

I have found out though that the batteries don't last forever, and shorter at -5 degrees, but this is why carrying a spare battery and SD-card is a good idea!

Tomorrow I will fetch my newly coded 35Lux (took the promised 4 weeks) and head for Budapest :D

Yes a bit T&C.

Well just because you bought it at the end of January doesn't mean it is from the second batch of cameras produced. It could be from the first and then sent back to Germany for updates before it was sold. I got mine on 1/24/07 and it has a serial # of 3100977. Which I would think to be the first run. Most all that have posted about DOA's or shortly there after have been in the 3104-5-6XXX range. That's not to say that some DAD (Dead As Doornail) units have not been from the first run.

We would all hope so. The only problem I can foresee is that in 5-10-20 years from now if the unit dies what do you do with it. I just had 2 of my M3's CLA'ed and had to have a part replaced in one of them. No problem the part was available. All M3's are at least 40-50 years old. Not sure you will be able to do that for all the new digitals, even a Leica.

Is this the same Guy Mancuso who was desperately looking for a loaner a few months ago because his camera had just died on him ? What was the first name of Dr. Alzheimer again ?

31003XX DAD. This seems to be the very first set of units (under 1000).

I have one of the cameras from the first bunch of M8's delivered in Germany and never have experienced any problem. The only "problem" I thought my camera has, was caused by a faulty 4GB SD card.

The hardware update in Solms went fast and the filters already were delivered 4 weeks ago. No problems after two official firmware updates. No dust in the LCD display after allmost daily use.

I'm wondering if there is any statistically evident proof about the contingent of defect M8's, beside several reports in the forum.

I totally respect you and what you have contributed to this and other forums (fora). But your rage now, and how you project what Leica will and won't do is without basis and inappropriately positions Leica in the worst possible light. I understand your anger over paying so much money and then getting what at the present time is an unreliable product which for professional purposes.

My advice is that you have two choices

A. You have some faith in Leica and keep the pressure on them to get this right. This benefits you and all others who have made the investment.

B. You give up on Leica ( perhaps understandably and certainly your choice) and sell the M system. You should then leave the forum and stop trying to get everyone else to agree with you and totally trash the company and its products. This is not helpful to anyone but probably helps you get rid of the venom you are feeling.

You are a very nice man and great contributor when you are being at least somewhat objective. The last few days is a sad ending to this process.

Sorry Edmund but I have to say this.

You have now totally trashed Leica and the M8. I responded to you on this subject.

Now you are trashing Guy because he doesn't agree with your position.

I will say to you again, "what are you trying to accomplish/" If you are trying to warn others that there are problems with the M8 and Leica in general you have done your job. If you are going to persist until everyone agrees with you and sells their M8's it ain't going to happen so give it up.

You have now gone over the top. For the sake of friendships, objectivity, and the future (both yours and Leica) please get off the soapbox. Your points are clear. Now let the future be determined by those who will persist (or like you, give up on the M8 and Leica)

Still your friend
