Advice needed re: r9

I currently have 2 r9's one is outfitted with the DMR and the other is my film standby. I have almost exclusively shot slides for years and use Porta for prints. My dilemma is one of focusing abilities of certain lenses and the marked differences between the two cameras. For instance, my 80-200 is razor sharp with the film camera but I can never seem to acheive that with the DMR! I thought it may have been a problem with the DMR itself but when I switch bodies to the unit, the results are consistent. No matter what camera I use, the film is always sharper. Is this possibly a problem with the DMR itself?

I know this is the film post so my other question pertains to black and white films. Which one will yield me a more timely look. i.e something akin to the photos my grandfather took in b&w in the 40's.

First, is your focus screen installed correctly?

I thought I had the same problem with my R9/DMR combination when I first added my DMR to the body after shooting film with it for several years. What was actually happening was that I found I was miss focusing more frequently than I did with film. After some inquiry I found that this is common with digital sensors because the sensors are on one plane of focus with no depth to it. Film is a little more forgiving on focus because the light sensitive emulsion has a thickness to it that will forgive if you don't get the focus perfectly on the emulsion surface. I suggest mounting you R9/DMR on a tripod and try some critical focus tests to be sure the error is not with you.
