Question about R lenses and filters

My father recently gave me his old SL2 and four lenses. Two of the lenses are early 70's models with bayonet posts on the outside of the lens barrel, as well as threading along the inner rim. I'm looking to mount my existing Cokin system filters to these lenses, but can't seem to find what the diameter is on the threaded part. I see numerous references to Series 7, but can't tell whether or not this is proprietary, threaded, or a bayonet. The two lenses are an Elmar 28 f2.8, and a Summicron 50 f1.8 ( i don't have the lens handy as I type this, so 1.8 may not be accurate. please forgive me). Does any one know what the diameter is on the inner threading, and whether or not i can mount filters by this method? Thanks in advance.

The early 1970's 50mm Summicron is a series 6 filter. They're still available, but you'll need a screw-in retaining ring to hold the filter in place.

The early 1970's 28mm Elmarit is a series 7 filter. A 48mm screw-in filter will fit series 7 (or you can use the method described above).

Enjoy, the SL2 is a fine camera and those early Leitz lenses are well made with good optics.

Yeah the SL2 is built like a tank! Sadly, the prism has some pretty nasty desilvering, so I've been shooting the lenses on my Olympus e500, and have been really really happy with the results. The only other way to get a leica dSLR costs almost as much as my car! Does the Series 6 have a standard equivilent? I'd like to get a pair of step up adapters.

Cokin has a couple of different sized filter holders which attach by means of three external handscrews adjustable to the outer lens front diameter.

Have a look at a Cokin catalogue for details. I have one which works with most R lenses.

John.
