Leica 50mm f1.4 should I get Black or Silver

Having a gray M9 I wanted chrome initially. Other lenses owned are mostly black so the look was not an issue after some time. The one issue that tilted my decision to purchase the black 50/1.4 was visibility, black does not glare outside and I find white (or color) on black easier to read.

re: weight issue...when I carry a heavier camera/lens combination I like the compression straps otherwise straps like the Leica and most others are fine. 130g would not alter strap choice, the Noctilux would.

Chrome is 130 grams heavier (465g as opposed to 335g for the black).

Yep, that's important esp. if you have a few lenses it will add up and on the other hand black lenses suit chrome and block bodies...

Thirteen months ago I found (when they were extremely scarce) a new silver at RG Lewis and (er) snapped it up. It weighs a ton, and one other thing: I haven't seen the chrome finish on the m9-P which may be like the older film cameras. But the new Summilux is a murky yellow-silver colour and I came to dislike it intensely on my black M9 – and sold it last week. So you need to both see the lens as well as checking the feel on your camera. I just thought the combination made photography more of a chore than a pleasure. Happier in every way to have replaced it with a new 50mm Summicron.

I should add that this was my fourth 50mm Summilux over the years: two in black paint (heavy yes, but a fabulous finish!) and one black ASPH, second in purchase order – I actually preferred the files with the pre-aspheric Summilux on the M9, so finally was persuaded by all the praise for the current version.......

Chrome lenses (and black paint ones?) also make my M9 topple forward when I put it on a table.

Now I put my black paint 50 Summilux pre-ASPH on my M5 - nothing causes that to topple over...

Try sticking a matchbox under the lens to stop it toppling over:)

This is very interesting thread because I was having the same debate a few months ago. Before purchase I hefted the black and silver and yes there is a big difference. I then tried the samples on my M9 and since I take pictures in low light I decided that the weight of the silver lens would help me with the slower shutter speeds. Then the dealer here in Seoul said that they offer more money for the silver Summilux lens than the black ones. I asked why and they stated that the silver lenses are rarer and usually wear better than the black lens and therefor bring more resale value here in Korea. But then maybe this is just a Korea thing. Can anyone confirm this statement?:

When resting black one topples M9, when bored reason more to moan :D

Solution is either matchstick (or equivalent) as suggested by OP-er or put combo on mini tripod, I use Manfrotto 709B cheap and surprisingly solid.
