There are no Leica dealers in my immediate vicinity and those within easy travelling distance do not have any demo X2 cameras for customers to try. However, just heard from Leica Mayfair in response to my enquiry as to whether they will have a demo X2 to try when they exhibit at the Rutland Birdfair 2012 http://www.birdfair.org.uk/:

Dear Mr K...... ,

In response you your X2 enquiry being at bird fair, the camera will be there and you will be able to pop your SD card in and take a few images to compare the two cameras. I hope that this has been helpful to you and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact us at any time. We hope you enjoy bird fair.

Many thanks

Alison

... I'll be attending ... there are too many conflicting reports/opinions for me to make my mind up without trying the camera first.

Dunk, I feel your pain. I've had my X2 for less than a week, but here's one more vote for the "GO FOR IT" column. I too was concerned after reading some posts about sharpness issues, etc. There isn't a dealer closer than a day's drive from me. I ordered mine from Adorama for a couple of reasons. I've been dealing with them for years upon years, and they have a good return policy. Looks like I won't be needing to go down that road! This camera has impressed me to no end, and I think it will be perfect for what I want it to do. NO issues with sharpness either. It's right on par with my Nikon D7K. As well it should be - I've heard they have the same Sony sensor...? Auto focus is plenty fast for my style of shooting. I haven't played with manual focus much yet. I have the OVF for now and love using it, but I'll explore MF more once I acquire the EVF. Weather hasn't been good here lately, so I haven't shot anything worth posting just yet. I never had an X1, so I'm not qualified to compare the two. Sure do love this X2 though! :)

Another vote for the X2.

A considerable improvement over the X1, especially the power management...... Battery lasts a looooongtime. I never found the AF speed a problem, but it is much faster now. No sharpness problem as far as I can see.

So ... I went to the Birdfair and tried the X2 and was immediately very impressed by the improved ergonomics ... ie the more positive shutter speed and aperture dials which have much better non-slip 'click stops'. A forum friend borrowed the demo X2 camera and used his card to take a series of photos which he will process and assess. Unfortunately, Leica did not bring a the X2 EVF to the fair ... which was a big disappointment ... thus any assessment of the successor to the X1 will be incomplete.

Why Leica forgot to bring the EVF is a mystery ... and has probably dissuaded me from considering purchase of an X2 ... and persuaded me to wait until Photokina to see what other offerings might be available.

None of the other dealers at the fair had the Olympus EVF on display.

The Birdfair was a very enjoyable - but was, as expected, more of a sport optics hardware event than an opportunity to try cameras.

I spent a very enjoyable time trying out the Kowa HIGH LANDER observation binocular ... 82mm objective with 32x magnification eyepiece ... the image was superb.

Best wishes
