MG1509 Posted July 22, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted July 22, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone. Â I'm quite new to this forum but I haved been an avid Leica shooter for many years. I am enjoying the readings here. Â I am not a collector as such, first and foremost I use my Leicas but I am nevertheless very interested in the Leica history. Recently I bought a Leica M2 near mint. My father used to have an M2 which I used when I grew up. Now I have my own one - a chrome M2 with selftimer. I am puzzled by the serial number though and maybe some of you can help me. Â Serialnumber is 980158 and according to all standard Leica literature (that I know) and internet search it should be an M1 from 1959. Â My own guess is either it is a converted M1 or an regular M2 since serial number listing only are approximate? Â Best regards MG1509

doubice Posted July 28, 2012 Share #4  Posted July 28, 2012 Most M2, M3 and M4 bodies were engraved with the model number preceding the serial number. The M1’s I have seen were mostly only engraved with the serial number and the M1 designation was on a plate which masked the small rangefinder window. Is your camera engraved as M2 - 980158 ? If that is the case, either Leitz kept the M1 top plate and added the M2 engraving when the conversion was done or, it is an M2 that somehow slipped out of the factory among a bunch of M1’s. Irregularities are not unheard of in the Leica world…… The conversion from M1 to M2 was actually relatively simple, as the M1 top plate already had openings for the rangefinder; later MD and MDa cameras had solid top plates without any viewfinder openings. Cheers, Jan
