We know these weren't made with a Leica - which just makes these all the more intriguing. Surely it was a vision of just exactly these kind of images that inspired Oskar Barnack.

The poignant thing that attaches to all these images for me is the realization that all these people are long dead. They lived, just like us, with hopes and dreams and aspirations. With heartache. With joy. And now they're gone. These images may be the only thing left, for the people captured in these shots, of an entire lifetime.

 

Don't let anyone ever tell you photography isn't magic...
