rich_ Posted July 6, 2012 Share #1 Posted July 6, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone. My names Rich and talked myself into purchasing one of these lovely X2's last week. I was wondering whether to get a 5DMKII/III but decided that this was a safer bet financially as I knew I just wouldn't stop with the lenses! I recently relocated to HK so bought the camera in one of the approved stockists here. Luckily enough I didn't buy from the more dubious camera shops as they appear to be grey imports with no warranty (Unless you pay an extra 1000HKD/$128/£82 ( hmmmmmmm). I bought the Black X2 with the EVF and grip. Whilst I resent the Leica markup on these devices I felt they were necessary to enjoy the camera. The OVF just didn't seem to make sense to me for the money. The lens cap also annoyed me so I managed to track down one of those flower type opening lens caps for 98HKD! It works great and looks mean on the camera ;-) I have been contemplating buying another battery and whether to go to Leica direct rather than a 3rd party. I think that is the safest bet. I'd kick myself if a 3rd party battery exploded. I don't think Leica would care either. I'm slowly learning how to use the right Aperture and Shutter settings. My manual focusing is rather slow, I wish the lens collar allowed you to twist to focus. Next on the list is the metering and white balance. For now with my limited knowledge it takes a great picture. Utterly sharp as long as I set the shutter speed above 1/60. I've been shooting in RAW and allowing Lightroom to process the images. I found initially a class 4 card wasn't quick enough, this class 10 seems more than sufficient. I don't bother with the flash as I feel it makes the pictures look quite ugly. Perhaps if one was able to bounce it so not to make quite so harsh it would be more useful for me at least. I went to many camera shops and tried out the X100 and few other competitors. The pictures seemed crisp and Bokeh superior on the fast lenses but the build quality was nowhere near in my opinion. Mushy buttons etc. Anyway, I realise this is rather boring, but I wanted to share my experience and any pitfalls. Best regards, Rich Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I have the OVF for my X1 (no alternative choice) and an EVF for my DLux5 cameras. Each has its merits but, for me, I prefer the simplicity, lack of occasional image lag and direct clarity of an uncluttered optical finder. It is a personal preference. It takes a little while to settle in here but as cities go, HK is generally very camera friendly. The discrete size of the X1/X2 lends itself toward street photography and that opens up a whole new world. Enjoy the challenge, and I look forward to meeting up one day over a coffee. After overcoming the shock of the Leica RRP here of Hk18k, some 15% more than US and AU (where I am from) prices. It is a lovely camera. Am using an OVF as I find it connects me better to the subject. Enjoy and so share some photos. I have only had a chance to take some photos at home with the family thus far. Lovely camera. I've attached the two pics of closed and open. It's isn't the most beautiful up close but it serves a great purpose. I can understand the OVF being closer to the action. I almost want both. Definitely an excuse to buy an extra HD/Cloud :-) I have had mixed results with JPG, I think i just had to hold the camera more steady. I bought the cap in Mong Kok in Sim City. Its an amazing shop.
