Shutter lag and 1.092

I would say that on 95/100 shots it's fine. It's responsive. On the other 5 (and it could be less than 5) there is a very noticable lag.

The other thing that worries me is why some people say their M8 needs the shutter pressing half way for it to wake up after power on (mine does) yet others don't. There have been times when even the half shutter press - even several times - has not brought it to life, and I have to turn off and back on again. Worrying. I am seriously considering a second body just in case I have to send this one to solms.

I don't have that problem. Turn it on, wait for the red light to stop flashing and it's ready to go. Access the menus, either of them, or take a shot.

The one thing I have noticed is that when you first turn it on or when it comes out of sleep mode the shot remaining counter goes first to "0" (zero) then to the correct number. I do not remember this happening with either 1.09 or with 1.091 (when I had it on the camera for all of about 1 hour).

But my red light does not flash UNTIL I half press the shutter...... then the red light flashes, and when it stops I can go to the menu. Yes - my count shows 0 for a while too.

Mine too: comes on right away. Now, I haven't had to "wake it up from sleep" mode because I don't have auto-shutoff turned on.

Is *that* what the problem is maybe?

Anyway, there's either no perceptible shutter lag here or Rob Stevens, in addition to be a good photographer, is also very lucky...

Shot with a Noctilux (no less) a 1.8.... seems plenty fast enough to me :)

I have shutter lag on my M8 quite frequently. I am not really happy with it either, because it's so inconsistant. This shot may be instant, the next one (only a few seconds later) has unexplained shutter lag. This can't be a sleep issue, because there is not enough time between shots, so it has to be something else. It's also not buffer full, because it could happen on the first shot, it could be the second shot. I rarely shoot long bursts on the M8.

So, define shutter lag? Hmmmm... I have a feeling it's between 0.5 and 1 second. That's not normal.

David, is your shutter set on auto? If so, you are not experiencing shutter lag, but are waiting for the M8 to meter the scene.

With no auto, that is with shutter set to some specific speed, I see exactly the same amount of time between the shutter actuation and the image capture.

Dave, this behavior started for me with 1.091.

When I power on, nothing happens until I touch the shutter release. Then the red light flashes and everything is active.

Jamie, I, too have the auto-shut off disabled. I wondered from your posting if that might be affecting it, so I turned it on, and powered off.

It didn't make a difference: I still have to touch the shutter to get the camera to wake up -- from a power on.

I also tried that - and it made no difference.....

I also tried doing a Camera reset - still no difference....

It would be nice if some one from Leica could explain this, so we know if it's caused by a specific firmware setting or not - and if not - what might be the cause...

I have the same wake up issue as you do. Mine requires a half press of ths shutter to wake and very sometimes (not very regularly) requires that I turn the camera off and on and them half press the shutter.

I hope this is not another crash in the making...

One test I tried on mine was to immediately press the shutter button after turning the camera on without waiting for the flashing red light to quit. The shutter fires instantly and it captures the image.

Could the "half-press to wake up the camera" issue have started with firmware 1.091? That is:

1. At one time (1.09), no one needed to half-press the shutter release to wake up the camera, right?

2. Now (1.092), some people need to half-press the release to wake up the camera.

3. Did everyone who falls into group 2 (must half-press to awaken the camera) also use firmware 1.091 briefly?

4. Or, failing that, is there some other similarity among these half-press wakeners, like "original version since repaired by Solms," or "second batch, didn't require return to Solms," etc?

No. Mine has always required the half shutter press. I never loaded 1.091, and it did this before I upgraded to 1.092. The camera is from the second batch and did not need to go to Solms.
