LotharZhou Posted June 20, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just received a letter from Leica, the shutter replacement costs 600euro for the 4000/1 M8 camera, I guess it will be more or less the same for other Ms? Guest Ming Rider Posted June 20, 2012 Share #2  Posted June 20, 2012 £480. That's not bad when you consider the complexity of the thing. It's like a Swiss Watch.  I assume that includes labour as well ?
LotharZhou Posted June 20, 2012 Author Share #3  Posted June 20, 2012 Yes, everything included, final price.  £480. That's not bad when you consider the complexity of the thing. AlanG Posted June 20, 2012 Share #4 Â Posted June 20, 2012 It's like a Swiss Watch. Â Or a typical Japanese electronic one.
bocaburger Posted June 20, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted June 20, 2012 From what has been said by those who know the actual internals of the M8, the shutter is a contract piece sourced from Japan, and design-wise quite like those used in a plethora of DSLRs. A friend of mine just had the shutter replaced in his Canon 5D (original model, which he bought in 2006 and by the file count, almost 200K actuations). Canon charged him $150, it took 17 days door-to-door. Just sayin....

A few weeks ago I had the USB port replaced in a 5DII and it cost $140 ($200 normal price but a 30% CPS discount). Door to door was 4 days. CPS members get priority and a free overnight return. bpalme Posted June 20, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Considering the used rate for an M8 is about 2K USD. It sounds pretty expensive...but it's like a classic car at this point. As long as you plan to keep it a while and use it I think it's economical to keep it going considering the M9 is so much more. It's nice to have native FL of the M9 but I think my photos are mostly about the same on M9. Anyway all I'm saying is that it's not a throw away camera. Â Last I checked a D3 shutter replacement was around $350. None of the cameras are a piece of cake to replace the shutter mechanisms on to the best of my knowledge... AlanG Posted June 20, 2012 Share #10 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Are you sure a Canon shutter looks similar to this, I may be wrong ? Â Leica uses a Copal shutter. You can even see the marking in this photo. So do many other companies. I think at least some of the Nikon, Canon, and Sony cameras use their own shutters. LotharZhou Posted June 20, 2012 Author Share #11 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Considering I had my M8 viewfinder replaced a few months ago for 375 euros, I think the price to change the shutter to be ok. Not cheap though.

wda Posted June 20, 2012 Share #14 Â Posted June 20, 2012 Then I would favour getting it serviced. You will have an excellent camera with a renewed life-span.
