LichMD Posted March 16, 2007 Share #21 Â Posted March 16, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Great thread Sirvine. I've just noticed that I've quickly filled up my MBP and need to consider some serious redundant backup solution. I'm thinking ReadyNas as well based on the reviews. Thanks for bringing this up. Guest sirvine Posted March 16, 2007 Share #22 Â Posted March 16, 2007 If you go back to my original post, you see me claiming I don't need the $1000+ gigabit ethernet enabled NAS...which is exactly what I ended up getting.
barbican Posted March 16, 2007 Share #23 Â Posted March 16, 2007 Veering off track from photography.. Â One thing to watch out for is making sure you map the nas using an AFP file share. SMB has issues with some characters that people may use in filenames particularly on Macs. There are various ways to have the nas auto-map on login. Â You can speed it up a little by disabling journaling (measure this against if you have a UPS and if you consider it major risk/likelihood of a crash during file write. Â I like the daapd (iTunes server) daemon it runs. I have one desktop account as master iTunes with mp3 library on the nas. All other accounts and powerbook just stream the music. Always synced. I know some people have other syncing methods but this is dead simple for me. Â I also use SuperDuper! to backup both my Mac Pro and Powerbook to the Nas. Â You can make the NAS accessible over the internet (password protect) for access from work, friends, while travelling, though I haven't tried this. Â Finally, I hook a printer to the USB port on the nas and can print from any connected device at any time as the nas is connected to a gigabit switch. Â Great to see such smart devices in the consumer area these days.
Guest sirvine Posted March 16, 2007 Share #24 Â Posted March 16, 2007 It's a key point about AFP enabling, and the set-up wizard makes it somewhat straight forward. I notice that the wizard only allows me to enable AFP for the backup share, and not the media share. I'll have to go back and fix that later. Â So far the only problem I've had is exporting iPhoto (where I keep all my P&S snaps) to the NAS. Every time I try to export the entire library, iPhoto gets hung up with "Unable to create directory..." error. iPhoto is just an idiotic application IMO, so it's almost certainly the application's fault. I ended up having to copy the entire iPhoto Library folder from the finder, which is probably better in the end anyway. Â One thing that has always bothered me is that silly "Connect to Server..." menu item in the Go menu of the Finder. I thought Bonjour/Rendezvous was enabled on all Macs, so why the *&^% wouldn't the NAS (and every other device on my LAN) just show up automatically. I don't want to have to remember the IP number for every time I want to connect a new device to the NAS. (OK, it's not exactly hard to remember, but it's still easier to forget.) Â Rendezvous knows about it, it just doesn't know if you want to mount it. Â 1. Use Connect to Server... 2. Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items 3. Drag and drop the share icon from Finder into the Login Items window. It should now automount. If you can not drag from finder to Login Items, drag from finder to the desktop (creating a new icon on the desktop), then drag that icon into Login Items. marknorton Posted March 16, 2007 Share #26 Â Posted March 16, 2007 I use a couple of ReadyNAS's, 2Tb each which gives me 3Tb total backed up. They were quite noisy until a few months ago, most of the noise coming from a fan in the PSU which didn't so much. They've since replaced it with a fan-less PSU which is much better. Â With 4 hard drives in there, there's bound to be quite a lot of heat to extract - the drives are packed closely together and you certainly don't want the drive life being compromised by local overheating. In other words, you can't open "Connect to Server..." and then just select from a list of available devices.  On second thought, the NAS probably appears in the "Network" directory in the finder. I always forget about that thing.
