Hi,

A couple of things.

Third time lucky - the latest camera works perfectly! After two DOA’s, this one works.

Just spent 8 days in Mexico with the camera on the beach in 30C weather with high humidity and no problems whatsoever. Took a while to get used to the sound/operation of it as I usually shoot with the MP and M4-P for my personal work, but I really do love this camera.

Now I want to get a new bag for it. I use a Barbour bag that I had a leather insert made for, but it’s getting a bit tired, and the leather is really hard on the finish of the cameras. I have been looking at the A&A web site, but the photo’s are not very helpful at showing the bags.

I am looking at the Oscars Day Bag and the Sabastio’s Reporter Satchel.

If anyone has any photo’s/comments on these bags, I would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for helping out!

Hello there. I actually have the Sabastio Satchel and I love it. The dividers shown in the photo are removable, and I've found having a completely removable pad system is quite nice, in that it gives you extra spots around the outer edges to place items that I need along but don't access very frequently.

I carry my digilux-3 with me everywhere because of this bag. Doesn't look like a camera bag at all and has the space I need. I actually removed one of the dividers and use it as a flap on top of the camera so that it's very happily cushioned with everything else I have. I also have another slot open then, which I currently am using to store all my cables and my ipod and such. In the future, those will go in the outside pockets once I get another lens.

I like the leather on the flap of the bag. It's the only difference between the two bags you're shopping as far as I can tell, but it's quite nice. Further gets the bag away from any kind of camera/tech feel, which I appreciate a lot.

One thing to note if you have a 17" laptop, it's just barely too small to hold one. Needs another couple of inches of width. It'd be perfect for a 15" of course, but I don't have one of those, so I carry a laptop sleeve along with this bag for all my other goodies.

Now, on to some things you probably can't see in the photos on their site (I'll see if I can get some photos taken). When you open the flap, there's a very convenient long, skinny pocket that is the perfect size for a lens cleaning cloth, your extra cards, an extra battery, etc. I use this pocket all the time. It's great.

Also, on the outside of the bag, there is a nice canvas handlestrap. It's not a handle, and it's not an adjustable strap. It's just a strap that runs full length of the bag and works great for grabbing the bag quickly. I use this at least as often as the shoulder strap because the bag just isn't very heavy.

Anyway, I plan on having this bag for a long, long time. It's perfect for me, considering I carry my camera around at all times. Hopefully this helps you make your decision.

As an aside, I also got one of the artist and artisan wrist straps for my camera, as I'm not really into having a camera as a necklace. I absolutely love the strap too. It molded to my hand in about a month, and now I don't even know it's there. Might be a nice splurge purchase on the side, if you decide to get one of these bags.

Stefan, I have been looking at this bag, yet cannot find any information on it beyond what is on the A&A site, and I think the "inside" picture there is for the Oskar's One Day Bag. I hope you don't mind if I ask a couple of questions. So, the pocket on the front is one large one? I was hoping it would be two :( Can a magazine be slipped in between the liner and the bag itself? Does it have a pocket on the outside on the back? Do you have any photos of it to show the scale and what it can hold? Thanks in advance for any answer.

Per,

I looked at both the Artisan&Artist* ACAM-7100 (Oskar's One Day Bag) and the GCAM-7000 (Sabastio’s Reporter Satchel) but found the similar GCAM-7200 better suited for my Leica M8 needs. The GCAM-7200 is not listed on the Artisan&Artist* USA website, although it can still be order through the same sole USA outfit. Additionally, it can be viewed off of the Artisan&Artist* Japan website.

The GCAM-7200 is smaller than both the ACAM-7100 and GCAM-7000. However, I can still fit two Leica M8s with mounted lenses inside along with memory cards, an assortment of batteries and my panel flash in the back compartment. A little bulging with the flash unit, yes, but still good as a grab and run setup.

Additionally, there are two main things I like about the GCAM-7200, over both the ACAM-7100 and GCAM-7000:

1.) It uses ballistic nylon in place of the canvas.

2.) The top flap is designed with protection folds found on each side to keep out dust and moisture.

Altogether, I have three Artisan&Artist* bags. Originally, I acquired the ACAM-1100 (Evans Walker). It's a very good grab and run bag that was almost perfect for my Digilux 2 setup.

Next, for longer and bigger hauls, I picked up the ACAM-1000 (Image Smith) which is like the ACAM-1100's bigger bother. The problem with both the ACAM-1100 and ACAM-1000 is the top postion of the zippers. One can risk scratching one's gear if not careful which slows down the use for me.

The GCAM-7200 seems almost perfect for my current M8 needs, although a bit tight with the flash. The only other real criticism would be the un-replaceable sewn-on cloth strap which can start to fray under heavy use. Errr! Why did they do that? I’m getting some nylon thread to loop around the straps edges to ward off wear.

BTW, third time is the charm on my end too!

I have the 7200... got it in person at Photo Village. It is the perfect walk around bag for the M8 and two extra lenses. It has the virtue of being very small... but this means tha you really can't carry extra stuff... like a full-size magazine... with you. A small note pad, cell phone, ipod is about it.

Thanks for all your comments and input!

I was hoping work would take me to New York, but it looks like it's Chicago and I don't think anyone there sells the A&A bags as far as I know???

Geoff, glad to hear it finally worked out for you as well.

Per,

The Photo Village is the sole USA outlet for Artisan&Artist* camera accessories and bags. They maintain the USA Artisan&Artist* web site.

If you do ever get to NYC, I'll pop up and treat you to Katz's Deli or something like that.

BTW, has anyone noticed the megenta tinged black cloth straps for the bags in the photos on the USA Artisan&Artist* web site? I'm noticing this more and more from other cameras besides the M8.

I hadn't noticed that before, but did notice that my Nikon DSLR does the same thing as an unfiltered M8 in regards to infrared with some fabrics, though admittedly to a much lesser degree.

I don't believe that is right. There is both an ACAM and GCAM 7000, and the GCAM versions are nylon, with the ACAM versions being canvas:

I think the "Sabastio" is the nylon version, although I am not certain about that.

Does anyone know what "lapping desire" means (it is an option next to the buy button)?

Not exactly, I've spent quite a bit of time physically scrutinizing each bag. The GCAM-7000 uses ballistic nylon only for the bottom and back. The top and sides are canvas with leather covering just the front flap. The GCAM-1000 and GCAM-1100 are full leather and the GCAM-7200 is ballistic nylon and leather.

The GCAM-7200 is the only Artisan&Artist* top flap designed bag that does not use of any canvas at all to wear through like my original ACAM-1100 (Evans Walker) has.

not not-exactly: the Sebastio Reporter (7000) has a ballistic bottom, back pocket and front pockets. the ends, front wall, inner back wall and top and strap are canvas. the flap is ballistic on the inside and leather on the outside.
