Aperture 3 Update

Recommended Posts

Yes this looks like a really substantial update.

I find this change funny, though:

Minor terminology changes, including "Original" instead of "Master" and "Info" instead of "Metadata"

BUT - it looks like it requires Lion 10.7.4

I'm running Snow Leopard on my Macs...

The Highlight Shadows change seems to have resulted in a loss of functionality. With Aperture 3.2 I tended to adjust the High Tonal Width and Low Tonal Width Parameters to 60 rather than the default of 40. The increase in these two pararmeters increaed the strength of the Highlights and Shadows Sliders. The 3.2 system of Highlghts and Shadows did wonders in bringing out texture in things like snow patches and glaciers in landscapes.

In Aperture 3.3 the High Tonal Width and Low Tonal Width parameters are no longer there and the visual impact of the Highlight and Shadows controls are much less. I think I can manipulate the curves and levels controls to achieve much the same effect I had with the 3.2 version of the Highlights and Shadows parameters. However the user interface for the Curves tool is a hard tuse to make fine adjustments with a touchpad as the plot is limited to a small portion of the screen.

I've poked around the limited information with the 3.3 release to see if I missed something in the new version but so far I can't find any way to recover the lost functionality.

I found a work around to using the older Highlights and Shadows adjustment on one of the Aperture bogs.

1. Pick a old image with the Highlights and shadows adjstment in it.

2. Make a new version.

3. Remove all the adjustments except the old highlights and shadows adjsutments

4. Go to the Effects pull down and "Save as Effect" and name something you can spot on the pull down.

5. Delete the version

Anytime you want to use the old Highlights and shadows just apply the nw Effect.:)
