Sharpness is a bourgeois concept.

~Henri Cartier-Bresson

one of my favorite quotes.

I don't see any problem with the X2 as far as sharpness is concerned. Received the camera Saturday and used it this weekend.

Incredible camera...beyond my expectations.

Leicarox, I've been voraciously ingesting everything I can find about the X2 before I pull the trigger and I'm starting to wonder if it may have something to do with IS. Have you experimented with that? Tripod, etc?

Well, the camera is a blast. I'm not at the point where I'm taking my images too seriously--still trying things out, getting comfortable with it.

I can say, though, that I'm experiencing some of these blurry photos in conditions where I'm fairly certain the problem isn't with me as a photographer. At EOF 35mm, I should be able to take a photo at 1/30s and have it come out very sharp. I can take a very sharp photo with my M9 at 1/15s using a 50mm lens.

As someone else mentioned, every once in a while a photo out of the X2 is crazy sharp. But it's only once in a while. I'd say 70% of my photos are botched.

In any case it's e

ther me (while doubtful, I'm not ruling that out) or early firmware. I figure it'll get sorted out before I start using the camera productively.

I can upload images if anyone is interested. I took some today of a row of nuns in an airport--plenty of light, f/5, 1/30s. Blurry.

Firmware 1.0.

My sentiments exactly :-)

Perhaps the faster auto focusing speed/motor is actually not as precise as the X1. Perhaps the telescoping lens assembly doesn't place everything perfectly every time?

Possibly returning for a used M8 today. Will A/B against the black X2 floor model though. I'm still under the impression that the X1 images are a bit sharper out of the box.

Why don't wait for a new firmware to improve the X2? I'm sure Lecia is ironing some issues. Give them time.

Maybe you have a lemon. :D

LOL perhaps!!

I think I'm going to go take a few test shots against their demo model later.

Thanks for the comments..I shot the images and needed them for a slideshow and the processing was very fast and not all that good and really are not great representations of sharpness out of the camera..To my eye now they look oversharpened as I had the setting to sharpen upon export to JPEG..

But yes the X2 image quality is to my mind and as said incredible..I did shoot a lot this weekend testing the camera in very varied lighting conditions.

Nice B&W pics. What settings did you use. AF or ZF?

I just about never used the AF on my X1 with a few rare exceptions. But I wanted to give the X2 a good workout day one and used all focus options with only a few ZF. I was surprised it was as usable as it is...

It seems that I get the same problem with my camera too. I am quite disapointed to be honest as I had much better shots with my Digilux 4. Most images I shot caming up slightly blured and I haven't seen anything realy sharp yet. Do you thing it's a camera issue?

What are your settings? Most of us who have X2 have no problems at all. Maybe its user problem.

A couple of things since my last report:

The blurriness in my image seems to be, in fact, user error, though I wouldn't characterize it that way as dismissively as Spaniard69.

The X2 is a very light camera with very high resolution. I am able to take a sharp photo at 1/30s, but it takes a lot more effort and concentration than taking a shot at similar speeds and focal lengths using other cameras (D-lux 4, M9 being "other cameras"). I'm not a novice, but clearly muscle-wise, it's going to take some training to be able to "run and gun" (as David Farkas put it to me in an email) to get clear shots more reliably. I think the relative weightlessness of the camera and the fact that blurriness can be registered with such precision :) don't help me in this regard.

To compensate in the interim, I use manual shutter speeds of 1/60 and 1/125, and this has resulted in a much better keeper rate, with no discernible loss on images (ISO gets bumped but coming from an M8 and an M9, almost all high-ISO images from the X2 are stunning!)

I do find the EVF and focusing through that viewfinder helps (largely in terms of having a third point--my head--against which I can balance the camera).

Anyway, a_manolis, keep at it.

OK, I don't have the X2. I have the X1 and I am sticking with it! I get insanely sharp images from it time after time. I suffer from a mild genetic tremor but even this doesn't seem to cause a problem unless the shuttter speed drops below 1/30sec. I also have a Nikon D7000 which I believe has the same sensor as the X2. Quite a few people on the Nikon forum mention occasional problems with sharpness with the D7000, which most put down to the sensor being more "sensitive" than say a 12MP sensor such as on the X1. It will highlight focussing issues particularly. Just a thought....

Makes sense that 16mpix should readily show slighter motion blur than a 12mpix on the same sized sensor. If you go back to the D7000 or 7D forums when the high mpix sensors first became available you'll see a lot of complaints of soft images.

Carl Weese recently wrote a good article on sharp prints on The Online Photographer. He claims with the higher mpix numbers we are seeing these days that the old 1x focal length in 35mm equiv minimum shutter speed guideline is now too slow.

Personally I try never to shoot below 1/60th because I'm not steady enough with any camera. I admire those that can hand hold 1/15.

Hi everybody,

I own only the X2 and post some pics to show the difference between “natural” and “artificial” sharpness.

Have a look at this 300% crop of the DNG file and the Jpeg superfine. You can see that Jpeg is artificial sharpness.

Would anyone else with extensive X1 ownership/experience now with the X2 chip-in on it's performance in comparison to the X1? (specifically on this focus/sharpness issue, with firmware 1.1 if possible). TIA.

I've posted about this recently and posted images here and yesterday in the Photo section.

Short story is that I am delighted with the X2. I owned 2 X1's and also own an M9. Better than expected but of course it depends what type of work you do with it. Just like the X1, I find the camera requires a bit more thinking to maximize results.
