Hi,

I am a novice to digital workflow, but have used an M6 for a few years and went digital with an m8 a few months ago.

Today i bit the bullet and took a few images down to the local professional photographer who also processes other peoples images, to have them stretched onto canvas. i thought he would suggest a whole array of post production changes, but it was all done in about 1 minute, as we were nearly 100% content with the raw product unadulterated.

He was super impressed with the quality of image from the m8 and I could see his brain claculating whether he could afford to invest in an m8 of his own.

Here are 2 of the images as jpegs

Michael

Great shots, especially the second one. Since we are posting corny sunset shots, here is one I took yesterday.

Technically, these results are exactly what I had trouble getting out of the Canon 5D I owned before the M8. The dynamic range is awesome, and the sky, although slightly blown out, doesn't exhibit the hue-shift that the 5D is likely to have delivered. Don't get me wrong: the 5D is a great camera, but the M8 is a bit above that.

Btw, there was a whole thread on the print results of the M8, with David Adamson (ADAMSON EDITIONS | ADAMSON GALLERY) saying that he was getting a similar look from the M8 prints that he is used to from 4x5". There was some controversy over that statement, but he does know what he is talking about better than most or all of his detractors.

Really nice!

The CCD chip seems to be better balanced than it's CMOS counterparts.

Hi Carsten , this is a fine photo I like it very much even if it is as you say a ( corny sunset ) However a statement such as similar results from the M8 as you would see from 4x5 needs to be taken with a grain of salt, in fact I don't accept claims like the same as med. format.

Just calculate the the dpi from a 6x7 or 6x9 cm negative scanned to a 10 times enlargement. You will be way off. Do I hear you say just look at the results I have and while I am impressed 4X5 quality has no equal except perhaps 5x7 or 8x10.As well as that the poor reproduction you see on the net will prove very little and going further down this road

the age of computers has not even arrived yet . When it comes you will be be able to post 20MB files in a second. This we all agree on but choose to just ignore and make do.Please keep shooting I like to see more .

Cheers Manfred

No, the real focal point, the surprise white arrow, likely stuck by a previous walker is the focal point of the image. It is interestingly placed about a third....

oops.... it MOved (was my cursor)

sorry

PS. If you have an old slant desk the horizon is just right

... an apt description:rolleyes:

The real tension in this shot is the control lighting.

The red light in front of the open track is curious. means train can't enter, so Carsten, have a long wait.

While over on the gleis with a commuter train, the indication is green .. that is, the next train can come barrelling thru..

:-)

corny? in German, is rich wheat grain, very satisfying.

Apt description,

nice feeling of the am in a northern european city.

Technically surprised at the nice shadow detail

Carsten, any need to pull up the shadows, or was the DR of M8 working here?

Regards

imants: yes, that is an apt description. I like such stuff, corny as I am, but I have no illusions about the artistic value of it. I just do it anyway because I like it.

Victor, I had to edit the image. The information was all there, but the image didn't have the same balance as the impression from looking at the scene. I tried to get it the way that I remembered it, because it was quite spectacular in person. I used just Lightroom, and no dirty tricks, just WB, exposure, a little contrast and saturation, not much, and some fill lights.

Great shots,...........

Carsten - I can't tell whether you are being deliberately disingenuous, ironic, or truly believe the opening statement you made. I have no wish to be unkind to Michael who posted the two images I wish he hadn't, but as they are here in the open let us at least be honest. Neither image is elevated above being poor snapshots made with an expensive camera capable of extraordinary results when used with disciplined talent. These images add nothing to our accumulative knowledge of the World, or our understanding what fine landscape photography is. The sunset picture is technically and aesthetically awful; and I don't believe that in that location, uniquely in the world, it gets dark 15 minutes before the sun dips below the horizon.

I have happily followed several links from the forum to enjoy well executed photography, and completely understand people posting useful images with relevance to M8 handling and functioning issues. But too many very poor photographs have been posted in these forums which tell us nothing about photography or the M8's capabilities, I am sure I am not alone in wishing that this low level vanity publishing went elsewhere.

Jeez Chris, we can't all be geniuses. Even when I don't find much to admire in a photograph - and sometimes say so rather bluntly - I'd never say that the poster had no right to post what they want.

There are people of all abilities here, they all have a right to have their voice heard.

The first two above I find so, so. Carsten's I find much better - the light caught on the rails to the right lift is above the ordinary. No, this isn't the right place for such photographs, but I'm sure that's already been taken on board.

I agree...if you're going to post about your photos impressing other people, they ought to be kind of impressive. Having said that, I don't really care about aesthetics. What I like is not the standard (although it should be). Books and technique have nothing to do with aesthetics. If you're taking composition advice from a book, your pictures are probably not much better than "poor snapshots" anyway.

As for technique, there's very little that can't be fixed in post production if you're shooting RAW. You have to screw up really bad or miss the focus to ruin a shot, esp. on M8. I mean, it would take about fifteen seconds to straighten out that beach shot and get the right exposure and recovery settings. As for the center placement of the main subject--rules are made to be broken.

Steve - On this we agree. Where we seem to disagree is what effect publishing very poor work has on the integrity of this forum; I think irrelevent, poorly conceived and executed photographs weaken the forum. Good photographs, and links to good appropriate digital 'M' photography strengthens the forum. Proclaiming that something is good [as often happens when weak photographs are published here] when it clearly isn't merely encourages more of the same. I would prefer that such images were elsewhere.

Chris, we are all at different levels, and from any one of us, there will be shots at different levels. I saw the shots, was in a good mood, liked them, and that was that. "Great" in this case is not meant to be interpreted as "as good as Salgado" or anything in that direction, more like "nice idea" or something like that. I don't care that the horizon is slanted, the subject is in the middle, or that I would like to see the whole cloud or whatever. If I wanted to receive (or give) detailed critique, it would not be here, maybe not even online at all. For better or for worse, this forum is all about the cameras (for me at least), not the images. This is also why I tend to post in the digital forum rather than the photo forum. There is a lot of holiday stuff on this forum, and it doesn't bother me. In the images posted here, I personally just look for evidence that the camera is doing a good job, most of the time. Sometimes I get a little annoyed at out-of-focus baby, wife and dog-in-the-backyard shots, but that is about it.
