Why doesn't the Photo Forum have a Street Photo category?

The Atget picture posted above. Forgetting he's an acknowleged master of Street, which category on this forum would you place it in?

As we currently stand, it would have to be Other. I don't like Other as a category title either, I can understand why you see it as derisory. It's feels a little like "being relegated to Other" (though I quite understand that many will find that view a little irrational).

Here are a couple by Matt Stuart which I believe pose a strong challenge to the idea that Street must include people.

MATT STUART | PHOTOGRAPHER | SHOOTS PEOPLE

edit: yes,I know what it says in the title of his website!!!

Nice investigating Phil and illustrates the point exactly. It would be interesting to hear what Mr Stuart has to say. Maybe I should email him?

The problem with this 'topic' is that it always ends at a stalemate. I think the reason being that the traditionalists (itself a problem if you examine the traditional pictures taken at the origin of street photography), feel obliged to follow the succesfull route as shown by Bresson, Frank, Meyerowitz etc. Follow something else and you will fail, like Eggleston, Atget, Matt Stuart etc . . ?

This is just to do with a Forum Category. I take my hat off to The Suffragettes, Slavery Campaigners etc . . .

I don't really think I or anyone has said street photography must include people.

We're inevitably talking about broad categories for the purpose of convenience.

The point is that if we follow this approach, we could come up with hundreds of categories. Why stop with street?

The more categories you have, the more precise you try to be in categorising photos, the greater the need for each photo to fit one of the categories. Where do trains go? And footprints in sand? And half-eaten bananas (aside from semi-stuffed monkeys)? Stop worrying about categories. We'll manage.

I think more categories will make it harder to find interesting new photos, and also tend to reinforce existing ideas rather than helping us to be open to new ones.

But as I said before, I'm probably taking this too seriously!

To make this easy, I suggest the following Category Structure :-

A main category called 'Street Photography".

Sub-Categories of - 'People Street'. 'Non- People Street'.

The 'People' category becomes - 'Portraiture'.

There, that's easy. No harm done. Everyone's happy.

This would take 10 minutes and could even be done from a mobile, provided you had a good 3G signal (hey Andy?) :)

What's the problem ??

.............................................................What's the problem ??

I dislike the thought that all non-street people photos have to become "portraiture".

More categories lead inevitably to even more categories.

And you're forgetting: monkeys have feelings too you know! :D

I thought you had said Street photography was about people but I may have misunderstood and thinking on I can see that is not quite the same thing.

So.......I think it is agreed that People includes Street but Street need not include people. So that leaves Street photography without people in Other, sorry, in Stuffed Monkeys. It is all very confusing.

It would be nice if submissions to the Photo forum could be tagged, then one could put their photo in the Stuffed Monkeys section but tag it with Street and then those of us who'd like to see a group of Street photographs could search on the tag Street.

To be fair, and with all due respect to this wonderful forum, the Photo section is a little weak in its technical application. I know it is probably difficult or impossible using the current forum engine but wouldn't it be great to be able to see a small preview of the photos in the main page and to be able to tag the photos etc etc?

*chorus of "this is not 500px, you know!!*

It's nothing to do with me. It's not my forum.

One man's "street" is another man's "architecture" or another's "other".

You are never going to make everyone happy.

One man's People is another man's Other :D

The 3G was a reference to signal problems you were/are having where you were/are :)

Sure, you can't make everyone happy, just so long as I am, ho ho :D
