Advertisement Posted June 6, 2012 Posted June 6, 2012 Hi pragmatist, Take a look here LR 4. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted June 6, 2012 Share #2 Posted June 6, 2012 Did you create your LR 4 catalog? If not, the basic steps should be to make a copy of your current catalog (LR3), launch LR 4 to create a brand new empty catalog, then use File > Import from Catalog to both import the previous catalog and execute the catalog upgrade. (And, to be safe, make sure you first back up LR 3 if anything goes wrong with the upgrade.) If your catalog is installed properly, then you of course want to ensure that you're sending the files from your card/reader to the right destination(s). If you didn't do this, then you might try to reinstall. Adobe should be able to walk you through the dialog boxes if you have trouble... Adobe online and call support. microview Posted June 7, 2012 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2012 I think it's the case that with an SD card connected via USB to your computer and LR4 open, you need to press the Import button for the SD card images to show in a new window. These can be deselected at will. As I remember it, LR3 did automatically open the new window of importable images on the SD card.
pragmatist Posted June 8, 2012 Author Share #4 Posted June 8, 2012 Thanks guys, Yes it was just a simple matter of importing manually. Liking the look of LR4 at the moment but does not seem hugely different to LR3 to be honest.
wda Posted June 8, 2012 Share #5 Posted June 8, 2012 There are often benefits deep down which are not immediately apparent. I find I am on a continual learning curve
Jeff S Posted June 8, 2012 Share #6 Posted June 8, 2012 The added control afforded by the new tone sliders is a welcome and readily apparent advantage for me. Likewise for the the color defringing and chromatic aberration controls. The addition of soft proofing, Blurb links, etc. are bonuses. Switching to LR4 is a no-brainer based on my needs...even fewer reasons to use PS now. Anytime I can improve my workflow and print process for $79 is a really good day. There is a bug in LR4 which means that some users are finding that the Auto-Import window intermittently fails to open automatically when a card reader is connected. Some say this happens when cards from a particular camera is connected, but I have had it with all my current cameras (M8, GF1, TZ10). (Note: ones needs to have the appropriate Pref checked (Preferences>General> "Show import dialog when a memory card is detected") to have this work at all) This has been discussed elsewhere and I expect Adobe are aware of it now, so it should get fixed in 4.2 Jim

This is happening to me. It's no big deal, but I was wondering what is going on. It is intermittent and it has happened with both my M9 and my NEX 7. I only use SanDisk Extreme cards. I also have LR set to automatically eject the card after import. It is likewise, only intermittently doing the ejection.
Jeff S Posted June 11, 2012 Share #9 Posted June 11, 2012 There are often benefits deep down which are not immediately apparent. For instance, color temp and tint can now be adjusted on a local basis (LR 3 did so only for saturation) using either the adjustment brush or graduated filter. And many of the develop module tools, e.g., clarity, use better algorithms. Just a few of many refinements. Adobe does a good job listening to user feedback, not just on obvious bugs, but practical changes for working photographers. Jeff
