symmetron Posted June 5, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Going to Italy for three weeks and am debating which cameras to bring. Been there before and lugged my D300 and lenses. Good pics, but lots of weight. Â I'm thinking of bringing X1 with DL4, or X1 with D2. Traveling by plane, train, and car so weight is critical. Somewhat leaning toward X1 with DL4. Â Advice please. Thanks.

prk60091 Posted June 5, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted June 5, 2012 If by D2 you mean the digilux2 then I would vote against it. While a true classic it is a brick weighing a "ton" and you will hate carrying it around. The weight of that spectacular lens made me sell it. I would more often than not leave the D2 at home rather than carry the brick. Â Having owned and shot the DL4 and the x1 I would go with that combo
symmetron Posted June 5, 2012 Author Share #3 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Good points. A few years ago I took just the DL4 on a trip to France and was very satisfied with the results.
lars_bergquist Posted June 5, 2012 Share #4  Posted June 5, 2012 Bring what you are using at home on a day-to-day basis. I will be going to Tuscany in a couple of weeks, by air, and I will carry a M9, the 35mm Summilux ASPH v.2, the 21mm Super-Elmar – and my old lightweight 'thin' 90mm Tele-Elmar!  The old man from the 35mm Age
Jay66 Posted June 5, 2012 Share #5 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Been to Italy many times but not recently. I was last there in 2006 before I started using digital. I travelled light with one M7 body, a 28-35-50/4 Tri-Elmar, 50/2 'cron and a 135/4 Tele-Elmar. A pleasure not to lug around a ton of gear. Â As said above, take what you are comfortable with home, but I would go for the lightest kit that will do the job as you see it.

It weighs pretty much the same as an M camera.  Just bring the X1.
robert blu Posted June 5, 2012 Share #7 Â Posted June 5, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm just back from a 10 days visit in Prague (with a photo workshop included) where I only used the x1. Being a 35mm user in the film world I found the camera more than ok. I only occasionally miss the opportunity given by a medium tele lens for a few shoulders-head portraits. I left my m7 always in the safe of the hotel! robert PS: Probably it is due to my age (over 60) but traveling light makes life easier :-)
