Son of Helm Posted June 4, 2012 Share #1 Â Posted June 4, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Anybody who has experience with Leica glass combined with Sonys translucent mirror technology? Leica glass has low flare and thus clean colors and good contrast even in backlighted scenes, but the introduction of a fixed translucent mirror may have adverse effects on this. As the full frame A99 rumored to be announced at photokina 2012 presumably also has a translucent mirror, experience with A77 is interesting, also for those seeing the A99 as a platform for R-glass. Â Cheers, Son of Helm
Advertisement Posted June 4, 2012 Posted June 4, 2012 Hi Son of Helm, Take a look here Sony A77 translucent mirror, Leica glass, flare.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
berndr Posted June 4, 2012 Share #2 Â Posted June 4, 2012 I'm using a Sony A65 with Leica R glass and I removed the translusent mirror (can easily clipped out), because I only focus manually. But I didn't removed it because of flare, I liked the higher amount of light on the sensor. Â I'm hoping for a A99 for replacing my A65. Â Kind regards, Bernd. janki Posted June 4, 2012 Share #3 Â Posted June 4, 2012 Thanks Son of Helm, - very relevant topic. Since it appears that Leica is unable to make any "R - solution," - I am also wondering if the new Sony translucent ( SLT ) cameras can be a good option. A77 does it really well in tests. Any rumor says that A99 is going to be a real state of the art camera, with the very best data.
Son of Helm Posted June 4, 2012 Author Share #4 Â Posted June 4, 2012 When I switched to Leica in 1977, it was not because of resolution, but because Leica glass (OK, I bought an R3) had very low flare, which gave visible better contrast and much better colors. A salior with a red west taken against a blue sea would give a bluish red west, and low contarst, with all the competitors, but Leica reproduced a contrasty clear red west in the middle of the blue sea, etc. Later I bought an M6, and in early 2010 an M9. I think the main advantage against the competition is low flare. A lens with, say, 7 glass elements, highly optimized toward the goal of low flare, is much better in this respect than the usual 15 elements zoom lens used by now as standard. Thus I look forward to a solution, such as the A99, where I can use my R-glass. But then it is important that the translucent mirror dosn't ruin the suppression of flare inherent in the R-lens. I would thus be interested in learning about experience with translucent mirror technology vs. Leica glass.
peterv Posted June 4, 2012 Share #5  Posted June 4, 2012 Anybody who has experience with Leica glass combined with Sonys translucent mirror technology?  Perhaps you should ask this question over at:  Camera Talk - Dyxum forums  and:  Lens Talk - Dyxum forums - Page 1  Lots of happy SLT users working with alt. glas like the Leica R-line.  If there is a flare-SLT problem, which I doubt very much, you'll hear about it on Dyxum.
