SF 58 Flash & Quantum Battety Question

Greetings Folks,

Just bought the Leica SF 58 flash and would really like to hook it up to my Quantum Turbo SC (Slim Compact).

As far as I can tell, the Quantum CM58 cable should work. Does anyone use this combination? Any thoughts? How well does the setup work?

Cheers,

Edmond :-)

PS Also wondering if there's a more current firmware than v1.1; couldn't find it on the Leica UK website!

To the best of my knowledge, Unless there has been a firmware update for the SF58 that I haven't heard about, the only external battery pack that can be used with the Leica flash is one made by Metz (who also make the SF58). It is kinda expensive . The Metz flash equivalent however, can be used with a Quantum battery pack, according to Quantum.

Good luck,

Glenn

I looked at the Metz power pack & wasn't very impressed; it's too large for my liking. Plus, I already have three Quantum Turbo SCs so would rather use those - if they work!!

I hope someone has tried this setup and is happy with it; otherwise I just might have to go for the Metz pack :-(

Edmond,

Your best answer might be had by placing a call to Leica and asking them what external battery pack they say CAN be used with the SF58.

I've done several searches and can't find which external battery pack is recommended by Leica for the SF58 anywhere.

I did find a post or two in this forum where Metz recommended their own rechargeable battery pack, and one where someone successfully used the Metz pack with the SF58 .

Yes, this reference (at the bottom) suggests this is the case for the vanilla Metz flash. Is the SF-58 sufficiently different from the 58 AF that the same compatibility wouldn't also apply?

Not a very scientific answer, Edmond, but I don't think you can do any damage trying the SF-58 and Quantum combination out.

You are of course right Glenn but I feared an almost automatic response of no, get the Metz power pack!

Thanks Ian - I think I shall give it a try!! Fingers crossed :-)

This thread seems to have dropped off without an answer, so I'll supply mine. I just bought a used CM58 cord from B&H and tried to plug it into my Leica SF-58 flash and although the plug would at first appear to be compatible with the flash unit it is not; it would not fully seat and thus not give power from my Quantum Turbo SC battery pack to the flash.

I'll now send it back to B&H for a refund.

Did anyone else get a different result?
