There was a long discussion/heated argument about that at Photonet, my sense and I thing Doug would agree, was that there was a time that Leica reached an apex, between 1968/ 1978.... they had a "group" ( light/ lens/ spectrometer experts) then that produced some of what we call the "Gems"..then around the 80's..about 85 or so..it stopped.

The newer lenses have outstanding sharpness and color rendition, but there is a certain " je ne sais quoi" missing....

In the end , the reams of threads and posts at Photonet, the conclusions were, its a matter of personal taste and preferences.

I totally agree. My two favorite lenses are the 135mm Tele Elmar and 50mm F1.5 Summarit (both from the 60's). The way they render color is special.
