I think only do-it-yourself for the lens coding will be possible. This is the reason Rangefinder forum abandoned the idea of offering an independent coding service. Â Now, to echo Sean and others, since Leica is the inventor of the open system, how 'bout they put an option in the menu to identify the lens. Â This could be done with mylar stickers (not paper) and could possibly last at least a reasonable number of lens changes. Not something a pro would want, but for those with, say, a non-Leica wide-angle used most of the time, it could be very handy. Of course, Leica could have given us a manual lens-ID option in the software, couldn't they? Â There is no law against printing B&silver stickers - I don't think the bar code itself could be copyright in any civilised countries. Where you stick it is up to you. So - can you print on Mylar? But there is certainly some tolerance. With a new camera and lens, though, I doubt a sticker would last very long. Â It might work using an M-screw adapter (anyone know of anyone making screwmount wideangles???). You could just leave an adapter on the body. In fact, I've heard there is actually an entire range of screwmount lenses. Can that be true? :-) Â A Mylar sticker might also work with a "cutaway" adapter. Â Manual entry - including user specific abbreviations - could work and makes a lot of sense. Â But you should know that my unmodified M8 with 1.092 recognizes my uncoded 90mm Tele Elmarit. How it does this is somewhat of a mystery; I think it is the selection lever. At first I thought it was the default coding of all blank - but that is not the code. Any others who found the same?
