18 SE polafilter

I want a polafilter for my 18mm SE. Thinking of an B+W kaisseman or B+W slim. The shop also adviced me an rodenstock pola.

Anyone having experience with any? Does the 18 on a m9 needs an slimfilter?

Thanks

I hesitate to put in my two-pennyworth here, since I have neither this lens, nor an M system, but please accept a few general comments in the spirit in which they are intended! I think I'm right in saying that you can get a slim Kasemann from B+W in E77, so you don't have to choose between the two! (As I said,I don't have the M system myself, but my understanding is that you need to use the filter adapter for this lens in conjunction with an E77 filter, which is big, but then the lens is very wide. SInce you need to use the adapter as well, I would certainly get a slim version.)

But the other thing to bear in mind of course is that, with a lens as wide as this, the polarising effect may well not be uniform across the image frame, because the angle of the rays varies so much, and the polarising effect is a function of this. This may give some strange results.

I want to very strongly side with John on the usefulness, or rather uselessness, of pola filters on superwide angle lenses. In fact, because of the uneven effect both on the sky and on reflections off water etc., I would never even consider using a polarizer on a lens with a wider accceptance angle than that of a 35mm lens (on a 24x36 sensor, that is).

U are absolute right. Since I use the lens now as an 24mm on my M8 I never really think of it as an extreme wide lens. Luckily I did not buy the filter today.

As for the safe filters on the 18 SE (for ND or other filters), on the website of Ken Rockwell I found 5mm filters (only the part that sticks out, not the thread) won't vignette, 7mm does however so its gonna be quite tight.
