phancj Posted May 17, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 17, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all, Just suddenly thought of getting a kiwifotos tube for the X1 plus some polarizing filters, ND , etc, etc. Can I know what lens cap to use for these filters (probably go with B+W as that is what I use for my nikons)...suggestions? I am assuming the original lens cap for x1 will no longer do once I put on the tube and filters? I use my X1 bare for 2 and half years but since I am going to the grand canyon this sep so... Thanks! Any and all ideas welcomed! CJ
Advertisement Posted May 17, 2012 Posted May 17, 2012 Hi phancj, Take a look here lens cap for kiwifotos & filters. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
spylaw4 Posted May 17, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 17, 2012 The kiwi tube takes 49mm filters. Although the original cap will clip in to a filter it is definitely not as secure as on the original fitting. So either drill a very small hole on the side of the cap to tether it to the strap ring or get a lens hood instead (I use a retro-Leica-style vented hood) or another suitable clip-in cap. I must confess I have not tried Leica's 14001 49mm clip-in cap, but I will if you can wait until next week.
phancj Posted May 17, 2012 Author Share #3 Posted May 17, 2012 Hi Brian, Not sure if I want a hood haha trying to keep the thing small still. Thanks for the input and thanks for trying to work out the lens cap issue too! And I do have time, I'm just taking my time preparing the X1 for the sep trip which is months away! symmetron Posted May 18, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 18, 2012 I use the same tube with a B+W UV filter for protection. I leave the lens cap off now when walking around because I hated always putting the lens cap back on after each shot with the retracting and unprotected lens. So far so good. Unfortunately, the camera is "thicker" about 3".
phancj Posted May 18, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted May 18, 2012 3"?? Are u serious? i think I will use it ONLY when I am putting filters on. IMO the X1 should stay pocketable. CJ

hmisbell Posted May 18, 2012 Share #8 Posted May 18, 2012 Yes, an extension tube that mounts on the camera body and extends just far enough beyond the camera's lens is perfect. I had one made by S.K. Grimes (attention Adam Dau). I especially like it with a UV filter to protect the lens. A polarizer is also a good possibility. Their email is <skgrimes@skgrimes.com> and they already have the dimensions for the X1. Good luck hmisbell
brill64 Posted May 19, 2012 Share #9 Posted May 19, 2012 the lens on the x1 is incredibly tough! i gave up bothering with a lens cap shortly after getting one. no problems so far. i'm not averse to the effects of shooting directly into the sun either & quite like the rainbow flare effect but i can understand how you'd feel the need for a lens shade. i use my hand to shade if needs be because of the bulk it can add onto the lens

My thing with the tube is for a trip during which I would like to have the option of using the circular polarizer and ND filters. Thanks, CJ
desmocrat Posted May 31, 2012 Share #11 Posted May 31, 2012 I have one of the Kiwi tubes for my D-Lux5, but don't use it that much as it vignettes the image at the wider angle settings. So I have to zoom in a bit before shooting. Is this also true with the X1/X2 without the ability to zoom "out of the barrel"?
symmetron Posted June 3, 2012 Share #12 Posted June 3, 2012 Well I bought the Kiwi tube more as a lens hood and to keep dirt out of the lens. There were a number of posts in other forums about dirt getting into the lens. More importantly, I hate putting the lens cap on and off. So this worked. As far as being pocketable, I use the EVF (which is marginally useful) so that somewhat killed the pocketable issue. I never really found the X1 as being pocketable in the first place sans EVF. But the tube and EVF certainly pushed it over the top as a far as being pocketable.

So I have to zoom in a bit before shooting. Is this also true with the X1/X2 without the ability to zoom "out of the barrel"? No it doesn't. Kiwi tube is fine. For the D-Lux5 there's another tube that works sans vignetting - 52mm fittings I believe, but can't recall the make at present.
