Scanning Portra400 w/ Plustek gives red cast

Hi guys

I'm having trouble getting decent colors from my Plustek 7400 when I scan a brand new Portra 400 shot with Leica M6 Zeiss Planar ZM 50mm F2...

There seems to be some red casting. I tried scanning with negafix picking the type of film and having everything set to default.. I like default more but still there seems to be some casting, sometimes even a lot.

In general I'm not too happy with the results I get from Portra 400 to be honest, I seem to get really grainy images and no sharpness. Really could use some pointers how to get better images.

I use a Plustek 7600, and sometimes I also experience a limited red cast. It happens from time to time (I mainly scan E6). Now, it might seem a strange suggestion, but I have noticed that it happens when the scanner has just been switched on. It is not a scientific observation, but I have the impression that if you leave the scanner a half hour on and then start your workflow the red cast does not appear. I have wondered if it could be a humidity condensation problem. Just my two cents.

AFAIK there are no profiles for the new Portra 160/400 in Negafix/Silverfast (yet). There are only profiles for the older Portras only and they will not fit the new Portra. You will have to create your own profile based on a different profile that gives best possible results.

Not sure if this helps but colour correction using ColorPerfect, a Photoshop plugin, is amazingly simple and accurate.

CP has very good Portra profiles (for both old and new Portra stock and all ISOs, plus loads of other films, too).

I have found CP well worth the money.

Following up another discussion, I posted some images some time ago, where I simply scanned some images in Silverfast's "auto-pilot" without further adjustments. The scanner hardware is based on the Plustek 7500. The results can be seen here:

The Fuji H400 has a pink-violet cast, my suspicion is, that this is caused by my IT8 calibration slide being from Kodak.

I find scanning older C41 films quite difficult but have the impression, that modern films are much more easier to scan, since most commercial labs should scan and print these days rather than enlarge.
