Ok...several weeks later, and here's where I landed...

The M8 just wasn't for me....at least for the "Throw it in the bag and go" camera I wanted. I ended up selling it on eBay, and narrowed my self to the X100 vs. X1. I took both out for a week and just started shooting. I gravitated towards the X100 because of the OVF/EVF...but the pics I was taking with the X1 were stunning. So....

I sold off my X1, and ordered an X2 and an EVF. It shows that it'll be here Monday or Tuesday next week. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the X100.

Film: Funny you should mention that. My grandfather had an M4-2 that was in a drawer. I'm going to pick it up this weekend. Since I only ever shoot B&W these days, I'm going to build a small darkroom in the basement and have that be my hobby for a while. I still have that Summicron 50/2...so I'll be in business pretty quick. It'll be nice to have something in my life that requires patience.

So....thanks to everyone that chimed in. The hunt continues, but I hope the X2 finishes it for me.

I shoot an M8 and a CL. Manual focus shouldn't be a problem if you've done it before or were taking photo's in the pre-digital era. However, no matter how young you are, we can learn to use new technology quite easily, so why not old? You just need to stop telling yourself that AF would be easier and pretend it was never invented.

That's the problem with technology. It uninstalls brain 'plugins'. It's like people saying "I couldn't live without my mobile". Well we did before they were invented. I was watching some episodes of the Professionals last night (on my iphone) and if they were stranded without a radio and needed to contact HQ, you had to find a phone box (remember them?)

I'm not sure what's the M8 is not as good as the X1. I personally feel, the M8 is on par, if not better.

I think most of us are happy with the results of M8 and we have earned the knowledge very harder and mastered it so we know how to use our life time dream camera. Any one who can own any cameras and have means to change it anytime before even he get to know it I think there is a big problem about his knowledge about what he is doing.

In my opinion, the X1 and the M8 are just different. Sure they are all but a tool, but for me shooting with a leica M always has its place in me. While some say that this means slower, low tech, bothersome, hell this is what got me so hooked on at the first place. I am glad you picked your choice based on your own encounter and not just through forum comments. Enjoy your new gears!

Daryl

I would agree with you on that Cyril, changing gears all the time wont change anything much about your pictures, unless you are speaking technically..

A few months later...

I think the "gear shifting" analogy was spot-on. I was spending too little time with too many cameras. Here's what I learned...

The X2 and X1 aren't for me. The frustration came from AMAZING IQ and CRAP AF. That's a very bad combination.

The X100 is a flat-out awesome camera. I keep one in my briefcase at all times. Great for snapshots. Great for candid stuff. Like a point-and-shoot for "Grown-Ups".

I sold the M8...bought an M3 to shoot film (because I had the lenses still) and as soon as I got quick with rangefinder focus, the lightbulb went off, and I was in business. I needed a digital M again.

I bought another M8 (for about 1/2 of what I'd sold the other one for) and took some amazing pics. The Zeiss 28/2.8 lens made all the difference. I still have a Summicron 50/2 that I took out now and then, but to have a GOOD 'every day' lens at the ready was the key. The Voigtlander 21/4 I was using before was just a crappy lens. That's why I wasn't getting the IQ I was looking for. I took these last week with the M8. I'm borrowing an M9 to see if I'll like that better. With the prices of those falling to about $4K for a used one, that may be the ticket for me.

I've still got a Canon 5DM3 for the 'action shots' but the M8 (and M3) are my go-to cameras for anything worthwhile now.

When I got my M8, it took me a few weeks to settle into the body and my existing set of lenses (a 15mm, 40mm and 50mm). While I liked what I had, I eventually added a 24mm to achieve a wide-ish perspective and now it's almost a permanent fixture. The 50mm Summicron comes in second whenever I need a portrait lens.

I'm happy for you now that you've found the appropriate combination for yourself in the end.
