simon2901 Posted May 11, 2012 Share #1 Posted May 11, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello all Something that might be terrible happened this evening, i took a picture with my beloved M8 and right after instead of the normal short "rewind" noise, the shutter rewinding mechanism just kept running, and every time i put a battery in the m8 and turn it on now i still runs, so that i cant take pictures or do anything, i tryed replacing battery sdhc card and all that stuff but nothing seems to work. I am a very low budget university student that uses all my free time on photography art/street photography and this would really be a devastating blow if the camera was broken, i am not even sure i can afford the repair. All comments and help are very much appreciated!

ho_co Posted May 11, 2012 Share #2 Posted May 11, 2012 Simon, it sounds like a problem that has surfaced a couple times where the mechanical linkage that tells the camera that the shutter is wound gets out of adjustment. If removing and re-inserting the battery doesn't work as you say, the only solution is to send the camera to Sherry or DAG or Leica. Leica will send you an estimate for bringing the camera up to current spec and giving you a year's warranty on the whole shebang. Good luck to you. Wow, like i though! this is so bad and the only reason why i feared going with leica digital, i only had the camera for like 4 monhts and i have taken 5000-6000+ photos with it loving the experience more than any other camera except my m6, which i had to sell due to economy. Anyone with an idea of what it might cost? really do not wanna leave the m behind.
ramosa Posted May 15, 2012 Share #4 Posted May 15, 2012 I recently had the shutter replaced on my M8. Through Leica NJ, it cost $475. I'm not sure if you would need a replacement, however, for the problem you describe. Such work at Leica NJ also provides a one-year warranty on the camera, which is nice. stonearabiapix Posted May 15, 2012 Share #5 Posted May 15, 2012 Leica has given discounts on their products to students at RIT. Maybe they would do the same for repairs. Give them a call and ask. They are really nice. Good luck.
downstairs Posted May 26, 2012 Share #6 Posted May 26, 2012 My M8.2 has this problem. Estimate for repair is €600.00. I sent it in two months ago and I'm still waiting to have it back, so presumably it went off to Solms. The fault was intermittent but once it started, the only way to stop the shutter was by removing the battery. The €600.00 is pretty steep for what is clearly a manufacturing defect. I'm lucky to have an M9 for backup so I suppose I shouldn't complain. Moral: Always carry a spare body.
