i think i will buy a M6 with a couple of tri-x rolls...

LOL! Back to reality for most of us.

My initial reaction is that the M monochrome is quite an interesting digital camera. As someone who is 100% film based, I do find it intriguing. I will wait to see how it shakes out before leaping (not that I can afford an $8000 camera to begin with).

The thing that mitigates the price (to a degree) is the fact that over the next 3-4 years I will spend that same $8000 on B&W film.

Inevitably we all pay to play - one way or another.

Isn't that kind of like finding out that Porsche didn't upgrade the motor in their new model and then going out and buying a truck instead? :)

Let's not go near 991 vs 997! This lot are almost as bad!

Viewfinder for the X2 is $524 or about 2X what the Olympus version goes for.

So for 2500 you can have less functionality, slower lens and 2 year old technology or you can buy a X100. I know everyone is debating the MM but the X2 is the real tragedy. The MM is a satellite product to the M series the X2 is supposed to be the compact flagship. Very sad day for those of us invested in the X system.

Oh well, looks like its going to be a D800E for me!

Buy whatever you like now and coming back later when M10 announced :)

I'm also tempting to buy D800 with lux 35 R but won't sell my shiny M9P yet.:D:D

yes ... and i think i will put tri-x in my m4 and enjoy the joys of b&w photography...and when i need the high iso, i'll use the m9 and convert....there is,i have to admit, something appealing about the m9m but the price is waaaaaaay too high. btw michael, like i wrote a few days ago, to make a big deal presentation on m10 just to introduce a b&w m9 and an upgrade to the x1 that doesn't justify a $1000 increase in price in comparison to what else is out there is, without question, a move to alienate the client base -- shows management is a bit out of touch or at least resolved to be a niche player selling to the 1%. really, an x2 for more than the x1 when all technology products offers more in the next model for the same price?

next up, nonsense speculation about mirrorless solutions for photokina.

who cares, whatever comes will be over-hyped and over-priced. happy with my m9, assorted lenses (maybe add a few in the next year or two), and my "new" m4. will watch the hype on the sidelines.

Very sad day for those of us invested in the X system.

There is no "X System". There was one X camera, now there's another one. It's not a. "system" camera. It's just another camera.

I have an X1. I won't be buying an X2.

The one thing that tempers my excitement for this camera (didn't know I'd be excited, but hey, you can be surprised): my M7, MP and MP-3. As lovely as I'm sure this camera will be, I'm not sure it'll beat the feeling of shooting any of the above loaded with Tri-X or Adox CHS25...

I sold X1 to save some for my new handsome M9P.

I might adapt a bargain X1 again :):)

Sean Reid reports 1.5 stops better high ISO performance out of the Monochrom plus it significantly out resolved his M9. Got to count for something.

Yes, this IS what he says. I read through his article and it looks like about a stop+ better ISO to my eyes in Reid's test photos (note:base ISO=320) and resolution is better but, not much to my eyes.

The D800E I'm sure will have better ISO and may well out resolve the M9M and you will be able to do more color channel PP without carrying around a lot of fiddly lens filters.

Oh well, I still feel fortunate to have a M9 and a few nice lenses. Lunch is over here and it's back to work. See you at Photokina...

Back to Jeff's post...

...what's with that top plate on the Hermes edition?

Read the whole page. It's a limited da silva thing.

And quite arguably the biggest news today, perhaps???

The biggest design change in the classic M top plate since the M3 -> M2 (discounting the M5)?

...and lack of the frame preview lever on a kit that can come with three lenses.

I wonder if it has a potential "a la carte" future, as I rather like it.

Don't worry - your film images will be infinitely better.

Its an anchronism!

Nobody asked for it

Nobody needs it

It doesn't answer any questions anyone was asking

It doesn't tie into anything the 'market' is asking for

I love it

Its awesome

Its bottled emotion

How can a company have the guts to make something like this!

I want one ......

Leica are totally *}%~^|^|%|%|£|€}€~^ unprofessional for using the date of May 10 to announce a non M10

They are beginning to utilize little child's tricks to get publicity.

NOT IMPRESSED

Oh well the interest will fall away from the rangefinder concept in the mainstream. This monochrome M9 should have been done concurrently with the M10 launch.

What a way of enforcing in the general mass public the preconceived notion of old rangefinder technology now gets even older by stepping backwards in time and going black and white.

The joke is on Leica this did not even require an event in Berlin and having people waste money on airline tickets and waste carbon fuels to get to Berlin.

What a joke. The monochrome camera is probably very good but loosing color they should half the price.

Only good thing from this is that used Leica M9 prices will continue falling as people realize that nothing new is coming and people shift to Canon and Nikon.

Big mistake on Leicas part
