It's interesting that many people discount the Leica Rumors website as being only 'rumor.' But you have to admit that they seem to be right every time (the D4 and D800 on their Nikon Rumor sister site, too.)

My dealer told me a couple of weeks ago that the monochrome M was definitely coming (but he made me swear to secrecy :)) He was told by a Nik representative that it was happening and that Nik would be supplying software.

I suspect Sean Reid is going to get a lot of new subscribers thanks to his field testing of pre-production M-M and X-2, released on his site at 3 pm. I had thought Leica was going to launch the monochrome model, in part because I knew that the Magnum guys had been pushing for one for the longest time. It is not going to be for everyone -- you have to know what you are doing with this camera, and the real pay-off is in making gorgeous prints. Having just bought a second (backup) M9 body, I am going to wait a bit, although I am finishing a book about Cuba which I have been shooting in MF film, and a final trip there with the MM would be really interesting. I say good on Leica. This is not some titanium toy for the rich to photograph their yachts with.

Have you tried it? I have … For the dedicated black and white photographer it is a highly desirable camera.

So you knew about it all along? Wow!!

Maybe for the price of the used m8 but otherwise please enjoy this monochrome old M9.

I will chew on a woolen sock instead.

I want to see the colorful eyes of my children,

for BW I can convert this in software.

Could somebody possibly please summarize the main points? The main Leica site is incredibly slow to open. It must be overloaded.

Leica Camera has created a new currency as a hedge against the dodgy € ... it's called the $ummicron.

Most people don't reveal the profit they make. I bet you'd be a bit upset if your customers knew your base costs.

I spoke in jest - of course Leica dealers must have a markup, like any other retailer.

You are correct, though -the dealer costs should not be revealed; doing so is pointless and will not give the buyer any sort of leverage on the dealer to try to demand a discount.

I doubt that anyone who wants a M monochrome will complain about the markup as Leica sets both dealer and retail prices (as far as I know). That coupled with the fact that buyers will outnumber available M monochrome bodies by a ratio of 10,000:1 (just a guess) for untold months or years will make the dealer markup a non-issue.

New products almost exactly as I predicted a couple of weeks ago.:D

The 'Monochrom' body does intrigue me but not nearly enough to consider buying it (I already have an M9 and M9P). I'm pleased to see the return of black chrome. I'm not sure I see the point of bundling Silver Efex with the camera - doesn't that software utilise the colour information contained in a 'normal' RAW file to make most of its conversions?

Personally, I'm a little disappointed with the 50 Summicron announcement. This was a lens I was hoping to buy at some point this year but it looks too large and is too expensive for what I'd want from a 50 F2 lens. The addition of a FLE will probably mean it is stiffer to focus than the classic Summicron.

Do you have a piece in LFI coming, Michael?

You bet! I got a prerelease M Monochrom in March to gain some experience with it and I must say I was impressed. I knew what advantages a monochrome sensor would bring, according to theory, but it’s always nice to see a theory corroborated in practice.

I was a bit dubious, but the photos from the M9-M on the Leica site are frankly astonishing. If those are direct from-the-camera without any tricks,I may even be tempted. I haven't seen b+w photography with that much depth and 'soul' since the days of Tri-X.

You know it isn't:p

To haul all those people to Berlin for that?

What a waste of time

Could have been worse. They could have dragged them there to tell them there won't be any new products this year. Still, I'm sure the dinner was nice.

A 'Little Bird' has told me that the 50mm Summicron will be limited to a production run of 2,500. Get your orders in now ! Even at the quoted price there are a lot of people who will want the 'Best Lens Leica has ever made' - that is some claim if you have used them all over many years !

I personally think it could be an exceptional tool when combined with a printer loaded with cotton rag paper and carbon black pigmented inks (e.g., Cone inks.) And also with panchromatic baryta fibre paper with a digital LED printer (e.g., Océ)

But that's the question of course. I don't think Leica would bring out a monochrome M9 that produces similar results to b&w converted standard M9 images.

Let's see what it does.

i cant understand why many here are disappointed.

leica is radical! it ever was and it will be in the future!

I'm with you!

I think with a 50lux it would become an amazing tool. Even as a second body to a 9/9P it adds versatility.

It's not the M10, get over that. It doesn't replace existing 9's, celebrate that.

Bet it makes GREAT prints, not that most give a sh...

I'm told it was sauerkraut und eisenbein, or bratwurst mit kartoffel. And beer.
