arnoldkramer Posted March 5, 2007 Share #1 Â Posted March 5, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have an older 28mm Elmarit and I bought a thin B+W IR cut filter for it. It works wonderfully with the M8. But, the filter is a little bit larger in diameter than the barrel of the lens, So the lens shade will no longer fit onto the front of the lens. It is not off by much, and I thought I should sand out the inside of the lens shade mounting ring so that it would fit over the filter and onto the lens. Â Well, it worked except that now the shade is loose on the lens and really does not stay properly positioned (it tends to rotate on its own). Â The thin B+W 486 filter does not seem to be threaded on the front, so a screw in 49mm shade will not work. Can you suggest a solution? Â thanks. robertwright Posted March 5, 2007 Share #2 Â Posted March 5, 2007 Hate to say it but the stock shade isn't doing much on the cropped sensor except looking cool. I'd just lose it, I don't have any shades on mine, and honestly, my experience with Leica shades and flare is that they are not big enough on full frame either to matter. At least with the M8 you get to see if you have flare after taking the picture. Since they block the viewfinder, I'd put 'em in the box and leave them. Â About the only use I see is that on my 35 cron, the shade is so small and tight it blocks the 'red flag" effect off axis to a degree, thereby minimizing the telltale of the red. Same with the 50. But on the wides you get it everywhere.
Woody Campbell Posted March 5, 2007 Share #3 Â Posted March 5, 2007 I use the vented metal 12585 hood on the 28mm Elmarit. Works very well.
