But look e.g. at the top three winning photos of the LUF one challenge of the last two years. In both challenges a Noctilux photo almost won the challenge. Both Noctilux photos were bad photos in my point of view. Nothing interesting but a nice rendering of the background. It's not the cake but the icing. Aesthetic will rarely create content but will certainly contribute to and heighten the message and content of the photo when used with consideration and care. I don't care what anyone says, aesthetic elements such as lens, lighting, film stock, photoshop curves, printing filter grade etc. can be the main protagonists in conveying the message of an image. It's no different to the quality of light that you chose to shoot in and how that can affect the message and/or 'quality' of an image. The skill is not in using or owning the gear and shooting everything in the same style but in knowing when to use the gear. The skill is blending the elements so it works to create a story. It's the craft that photography is. Same can be said for music. Yes you can play any song on any instrument, however, you can also select a particular instrument with a particular sound to help convey the message . But there may be occasions when a specific piece of equipment is necessary for a specific reason. But actually, much great art is the product of handling the compromises between the possible and the ideal. In my opinion, ever-more sophisticated equipment is rarely a step towards greater creativity, and frequently a step away from it. But they are nice toys! Which reminds of a thread in the Bar not long ago regarding images taken with an iPhone or similar. Different lenses would make your photos look, well different and not better, IMO. If I didn't think Leica lenses had a little something extra that I enjoy I would not be on this forum. I would be over on the iPhone photographers forum.
