This may seem a silly question but i have LR3 and when LR4 arrives how do i download it to the Mac? Will it just overwrite LR3 or will i have to delete LR3 and import my photos into the newly installed LR4. Sorry if this sounds a silly question but i am no Bill Gates!!

Thanks,

Matt

LR4 can co-exist with LR3 on the same system if you want. When you install, LR4 will offer to convert your LR3 catalog to LR4. Just be aware that because of the changes to the LR4 "process version", to get your adjustments to look the same in LR4, you might need to manually tell LR4 to use the old process version. This situation may improve with LR 4.1, so I'd think about waiting for that before installing - anyway, LR 4.0 has a (well deserved) reputation for surprises :D

Generally I agree with Sandy - though I'm currently using LR4.1 release candidate and have had no bad experiences + many good ones with this version. GREAT for dealing with highlights, and the whole version 2012 process works better for me.

I kept LR 3 on my system and it resides along with LR 4; did the same when going from LR 2 to LR 3, and eventually dropped LR 2 once comfortable. I update individual photos for now, as desired (starting with a virtual copy). Quite flexible, and gives me time to get accustomed to LR 4 (and to get the new Kelby book in May for any handy tips that I might otherwise overlook).

My download was easy; the hard part for me was doing the installation, which was refused because I was still running Leopard, and LR 4 requires the O/S to be no older than Snow Leopard. I skipped to Lion, and it was not a simple process for a number of reasons, but fortunately I had a smart friend to assist. Hope you don't encounter any such surprises.

When I upgraded, LR4 loaded along side of LR3. All I did was right click on the catalog file 'lcat' and opened with LR4. I let it do the conversion and has worked since. I never went back to LR3 and I am not sure how it will work with the converted catalog file. I am very happy with LR4.
