iomatic Posted March 4, 2007 Share #1 Posted March 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Leaving the unit on drains the battery, unlike the Canon 20D/30D/5D, etc., where they don't activate until a shutter button is depressed, and can lay dormant (with the power switch on) for a long time (weeks), with near-full capacity. Should I be turning the M8 off, and will then see better longevity? (It drained almost completely overnight, sitting on a table.) How long can you expect to shoot (days/shots-per-day, etc., roughly) if you do switch it off? Or is there a discharge cycle that has worked (I know this really only applies to Ni-MH batteries more, and that discharge is more of a circuit reset for Li-ion batteries, correct?) Just wondering per travel. I also hear the 1.091 may have addressed this? If this is answered elsewhere, please let me know, and apologies for the redundant post. Thanks. stephengilbert Posted March 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted March 4, 2007 Have you set the AUTO POWER OFF setting on the Menu? It has four settings: 2, 5, and 10 minutes, and Disabled. If it is disabled, the camera will remain on, using power. If it is set at one of the other choices, it will power down after the selected number of minutes, and will awake upon your touching the shutter release. iomatic Posted March 4, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted March 4, 2007 Yup. Auto Power Off = 5 minutes.
SteveP Posted March 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted March 4, 2007 I leave my M8 on (set to S) most of the time. With sporadic daily use, one battery will last me a week, at least. (And this includes almost daily transfers to computer via USB cable) I just checked - it's on S, has been on S since yesterday morning - battery still showing full. If you are wondering why I don't always use a card reader, it's because on my Mac, Image Capture ignores the DNG files on the card when it is in a reader, but transfers them when it is in the camera. iomatic Posted March 5, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted March 5, 2007 Hmm. Should the charger Power light be blinking green? I left it charging for a good few hours while we were out, and the battery indicator was empty... it only charged up to one third or so when we got back... is this bad? What's going on? Man, this reeks of 1.0... I may have to go back to Canon :\
Laki Posted March 5, 2007 Share #6 Posted March 5, 2007 hi jack, normally the green led should be constantly on and the orange one is going off after the battery is charged. so maybe you have a defective charger/battery? cheers laki

barjohn Posted March 5, 2007 Share #8 Posted March 5, 2007 If its the yellow LED that is pulsing it means either a) Battery outside temperature range specified above. or Battery totally discharged, pulsed precharging will be carried out first. See page 83 of the user manual.
Shootist Posted March 5, 2007 Share #9 Posted March 5, 2007 I suspect you have a bad battery. There is no listing for the green light flashing. Page 83 english section of the manual. If the yellow light flashes it is either the battery is outside the temp range for charging or battery totally discharged and it is doing a pulse precharging before the actual charge cycle begins. RTM. Contact your dealer and or buy a second battery. B&H has them in stock. iomatic Posted March 5, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted March 5, 2007 I did RTM. It is definitely the green Power light flashing. The Charge light is not on. I did order another battery, but I did just get this thing a week ago!
iomatic Posted March 5, 2007 Author Share #11 Posted March 5, 2007 Well. It's reading full charge. Go figure.
gravastar Posted March 5, 2007 Share #12 Posted March 5, 2007 I'm finding that sometimes I have to remove and replace a battery in the charger several times before it will start to charge, ie. constant yellow light. Once it starts to charge it will continue perhaps for an hour until it's fully charged. I've now had this happen with at least three different batteries. Room temperature is about 20 deg. C. Bob. SteveP Posted March 5, 2007 Share #13 Posted March 5, 2007 If you have seen the innards of the M8 battery charger (posted elsewhere under "Travel Charger") then you will be very wary of the unit. I have my fingers crossed that a third party charger will be with us shortly. Maybe it will even be smaller than the camera :-)
