Advertisement Posted May 10, 2012 Posted May 10, 2012 Hi Jim-St, Take a look here Where is the advance menu..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jim-St Posted May 18, 2012 Share #22 Posted May 18, 2012 Well, I'm afraid I've not learnt anything very conclusive from my dealings with Leica on this. I began by notifying the CS rep in Solms who'd dealt with me over recent repair that I'd got the problem (no Advance sub-menu in the menu) in the returned camera. As previously stated, I was advised to try a reset, which did not seem to make any difference. CS also gave me a number to ring to discuss with an engineer, but this turned out not to be a direct line, and I found myself in a queue at international call rates, and gave up after five minutes of rather dull music. Decided to try Leica London, to see if they'd patch me through to Solms, but got to discussing the issue with a London CS rep I've spoken to before, and he said he was pretty sure I needed to reinstall firmware 2.014, as maybe the repair had led to a mis-communication between the camera's electronic hardware and the firmware, leading to non-presence of Advance sub-menu. So I re-installed a fresh download of 2.014 on top of existing 2.014, and bingo!, there's the Advance stuff... So I emailed CS in Solms again to tell her I no longer need to speak to the engineer, and she emailed back as follows: "I spoke to the technician this morning. He told me that the “advance” on the menu is not available on the M8 only on the M8.2. So I am a little confused. I would be careful with reinstalling the firmware as well." I emailed back, quoting from an old thread on this site and seeking further clarification. No response yet, but it looks to me like the Advance sub-menu has been in all firmware for all M8's since 2.004 in March 2009. That there is some confusion over this, which exists in the mothership as well as out here on the periphery, is indicated also in the Leica AG website. Going in from the public space on the site, to Downloads> Rangefinder cameras> M8> Software- & Firmwareupdates gets one to a download link for 2.014. However, going through the Owners Area to my own M8's "Product Details" page on the secure server uncovers a link to download "Leica M8 Firmware Update 2.005" For now, I'm happy with what I've got, and I don't see any sign that re-installing 2.014 (carefully following Leica's installation guidelines, of course) has caused any problems. Where my Advance menu went I goes I'll never know, but for now my M8 is working just fine. Hope this helps somebody, someday.... Jim P.S. Will let you know here if I hear any more from Solms, but the line seems to have gone dead, I'm afraid
george + Posted May 18, 2012 Share #23 Posted May 18, 2012 Sorry to read about the problems you had but glad that you now have a well working M8. Like so many of us. Enjoy!
Guest Ming Rider Posted May 24, 2012 Share #24 Posted May 24, 2012 Uhmm, an M8 with the latest firmware but no Advance feature. Sounds like (if Leica's recent product strategy is anything to go by) your camera was worth £1000 more than a regular M8
