Leica Grip or Luigi Case with Grip

Hi I have always had a Leica grip on my M6ttl and as I have just got a M9-P thought I'd get a Grip. I have seen the Luigi case with built in grip. So has anyone had the experience of these cases with grips in. Don't want to order one if I'd be better getting the Leica Grip and then a case to fit over it.

Any opinions will be gratefully received.

I have both. I prefer the more "svelte" package of the Luigi solution - certainly as a day-to-day carry. I rarely use my handgrip, but it does help with beasts like the Noctilux.

If you're already familiar with the handgrip and like it, what's causing you to rethink that? Maybe therein lies your answer.

I probably wouldn't recommend a handgrip AND a Luigi case. That would make your poor M rather... Large.

Though I'm a big fan of Luigi's cases, I prefer the Leica grip to the one built into the leather case. When I use a wrist strap, I wrap my fingertips around the Leica grip and let it dangle that way as I walk around. That makes the camera almost weightless. Luigi's built-in grip doesn't permit that, as it doesn't give your fingers enough to grab onto. For shooting, I find that the Leica grip paired with a Thumbs-Up makes the camera rock solid for slow shutter speeds.

I have tried various combinations on my M8 and M9. I am a fan of Luigi's half cases with grips on non-digital cameras, but the back of the M8/M9 leaves little room for leather to maintain overall coherence of the case; this is especially true if you use a Thumbs-Up which I I view as essential. Leica's own protector over came this issue by strengthening the sides but it does not offer a grip as such. So I have reverted to a Leica grip and have got used to this combination. Now if Luigi has or comes out with a half case with reinforced sides and grip so it can forget the thin strip at the top of the back, let me know! Otherwise one nice side effect of the Leica grip is the original base plate can be left at home and preserved from those little bumps and scratches.

I have both, mostly keep the grip on it though. I find the grip makes handling easier from removing the camera from the bag to shooting.

Btw, I have tried several half cases, nothing tops Luigi's in my opinion.

I use the Luigi grip with the 'Thumbs Up' accessory and find that this provides a very nice combination of protection (Luigi half-case) and grip (bump on the Luigi case combined with the 'Thumbs Up'). This combination doesn't seem to appear in any of the replies. I have attached a photo that I found on the internet that is similar to my rig. I hope this helps. Regards, Alex

I have used the Leica M grip #14405 on both my M bodies for years and have always been pleased with their performance. They are very functional although not as elegant as Luigi's half cases with the integral grip.

If your main concern is function the M grip is the way to go IMHO.
