See, this is the thing that drives me nuts. That's a pretty nice thing that Sony did. It's almost "too" nice, if you get my meaning. In other words, was 'really' the chip's fault, or was the camera somehow defective and Sony didn't want to admit to it

 

The same thought did occur to me, however I have a good relationship with Sony, I've bought 4 Alpha 850s from them for my guides, and prior to that a couple of Alpha 700s. When I took the camera in I explained the situation to the technician and showed him my son's lens. The camera was exchanged then and there. A few weeks later I called out of curiosity and the technician told me he was sure it was the chip.

 

You could also be right who knows?

So, just for yucks, I just got the 5d back (a second time) and here's the list (this time).

 

CG2-2282-000 PCB ass'y bottom

CY3-1608-000 PCB ass'y DC/DC

CG2-2321-020 PCB ass'y main.

 

The last part is the second one that's been replaced. I know if it were not under warranty, that board is $600 plus labour.
