billib Posted March 27, 2012 Author Share #22 Â Posted March 27, 2012 ^ Hardcore. I love it. Ok, a little update on my Carbon Fiber modification of the Aluminum tubes for The Magic Arm. Both ends of the Aluminum tubes that make up the Magic Arm are flared. The Carbon Fiber tubes that make up the MonoPod are not. Their are two Gland Nuts that push against these flares causing the Aluminum tubes (Arms) to get progressively stiff. That appears how the stiffness of the Arms is adjusted. Since the Carbon Fiber tubes don't have these flares its not possible to adjust their stiffness or even keep the Arms captive. The Magic Arm with un-flared Carbon Fiber tubes wouldn't stay together and the the Magic Arm would come apart. Â When I had the Magic Arm apart I noticed that the two Aluminum Tubes that are the Arms were (obviously) very light. The savings in weight switching from Aluminum to Carbon Fiber would have been insignificant. The cool factor would be very very high but not the savings in weight. All of the rest of the components that make up the rest of the Magic Arm is where most of the weight is. I think you could say this was an exercise in futility. Though it was a lot of fun. Â Does anyone out their have access to a CNC Machine and a block of Titanium...........never mind!
Double Negative Posted March 27, 2012 Share #23 Â Posted March 27, 2012 Sounds like it was worth the effort just the same, as at least now you know - and like you said, it was fun. Â Hey, worse comes to worse... Wrap the aluminum tubing with carbon fibre decals. I might also suggest a flame paint job and side pipes.
