Aw, Andy, don't snub the poor fellow. We are not all experts.

A Leica with the serial no. 538042 should be a IIIf manufactured in 1950–51. That makes it a 'black dial' camera. Some 15,000 Leica IIIf cameras were made during this time interval. Check:

• The camera has a shutter speed dial on top with speeds of 30-1 to 1000, and a slow speed dial in front with speeds 30 to 1. That makes it a Leica III.

• The camera has a flash cable socket in the rear, to the right of the finder eyepiece. That makes it a IIIf.

• Under the top speed dial is a dial with the numbers 0 – 20. That also makes it a IIIf. The figures are black, not red. That makes it a IIIf black dial.

The interesting thing, besides condition and functioning, is what lens it has. Does the engraving say "Elmar f:5cm" or "Summicron f:5cm" and what is the lense's serial no.?
