In praise of the 35 summicron

Regarding the discussion regarding V4 vs the ASPH, I like the smallness and lightness of the V4 as well as it's image drawing characteristics. To show their comparative sizes, the picture shows the 35mm Summilux ASPH FLE, the current Summicron ASPH, and the V4 all with their hoods. For me, it's really hard to choose one over the other in terms of their performance. They all shine in their respective areas.

The Summicron 35/2 ASPH was my first (and for a while, only) lens on my M9. I had a silver chrome one, and I really liked it. It was small, and had a silky smooth focus (esp compared to the FLE lenses).

When I bought it, Meister told be that it was Leica's biggest selling lens, and I can see why.

I sold mine (reluctantly) when I bought the Summilux FLE as I can't really justify two versions of the same focal length. I've wondered since if this is something I will regret (so far I haven't). I don't follow this approach with my 50 mm Summilux - that is a lens I will be reluctant to part with, regardless of what else I have.

I loved its colour rendering and the pop it gave wide open, without distracting out of focus areas.

Cheers

John

FWIW, unfortunately my experience with this lens has not been great.

I had a 35 f2 ASPH latest version in silver chrome which was soft on the edges and back focused. I sent it in to Solms, nothing doing, they told me the lens was fine.

Sold it and bought a 35mm f2.5 Summarit which I alternate with the 35mm f1.4 Summilux, no issues with either of these.

I love the V4 Cron, and have never been tempted to get anything more expensive. But I did get, after a long wait, the Zeiss 2.8 35 Biogon, which is probably sharper than the Asph Cron. I like it, although I am not sure whether I prefer it to the V4. Truth is they are both great lenses. This from two days ago with the Zeiss.

You cannot be serious! The guy second from the left looks like a Kyle. The one at the far left looks like a Brian. The woman in the middle looks like a Carol. The woman on the right looks like a Jane. The man next to her in the pale blue shirt looks like a Jim. Am I close?

You get one point
