While I like the idea of a variable ND filter, especially for the Noctilux, it appears that no one makes one in E60, yet....

meanwhile I'll use the 1.8 I bought a while back, it's cool for using outdoors.

One thing also to think about: even with a 6-stop ND filter, if you are shooting in bright sunshine -- especially things like metal, or shiny leaves -- you'll get a fair amount of purple fringing. I am anxious to see what the new Lightroom 4 does to that, as it is getting good reviews for its effect on CA/fringing. But so folks know: the 6-stop ND filter (I'm at the office, so don't have my gear, but why do I think I have an 8-stop filter?), it doesn't completely control purple fringing with the 0.95 Nocti, alas.

Very true; the Nocti does fringe on harsh contrast changes (i.e. "purple fringing").

I messed around with both LR4 and the ACR 6.7 RC to see if this can be massaged out... No luck. Maybe I missed it, or need to play with it more - but I don't think so. One trick you could use is to go into the RGB channels and take out the purple component, but it doesn't work in every image.

B+W mention this will happen when using the 6 stop ND filter and suggest putting a uv/ir cut filter (486) on the front of the ND filter .i have just bought a 3 stop and 6 stop ND filter for use with my Noctilux f1 version. Will look into this next week when I am home.
